‘Tough to Have Expectations’ — Joe Flacco Makes Feelings Clear on Browns’ QB Competition With Shedeur Sanders and Co.

Joe Flacco opens up about the uncertainty in Cleveland's QB competition as four contenders battle for the Browns starting role during training camp.

Four quarterbacks. One starting job. Zero clarity about who gets it.

The Cleveland Browns opened training camp with Deshaun Watson likely sidelined for the 2025 season, creating a genuine four-way quarterback battle between Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and Kenny Pickett. The competition has stirred excitement and uncertainty throughout the organization. Flacco, now at the center of this storm, offered a candid perspective that revealed both the intensity and unpredictability of what lies ahead.

What Does Joe Flacco Think About the Browns’ QB Competition?

Speaking to reporters, Flacco acknowledged the murky path forward. “You know, it’s tough to have expectations,” he said.

“You know, I think there’s been some communication between probably all the quarterbacks and Kevin [Stefanski]. So, yeah, I guess I know a little bit what to expect, at least for the next week. But you can’t ask me. It’s hard for me to tell what it’s going to look like, you know, two or three weeks from now.”

That tone of uncertainty has become a theme for Flacco. While he brings the most NFL experience to the table, the lack of a defined pecking order has kept the competition wide open.

“It’s hard to tell what might be going on two to three weeks from now,” he reiterated, as reported by The Athletic, noting that he is focused on himself and “trying to stay in the moment.”

When asked if he had a timeline in mind for when head coach Kevin Stefanski might name a starter, Flacco offered a grounded response.

“I think there are ideal situations, obviously, and then there’s just the reality of the situation. And (that) is one of those things that I really don’t have any control over. So I’m really not worried about when anything happens. Obviously there’s advantages to knowing earlier than later, but hey, it’s just part of the game.”

How Is Kevin Stefanski Handling the Quarterback Decision?

While Flacco stays grounded, Stefanski has been deliberate in his approach.

According to Sean Neumann of PFSN, Stefanski told reporters, “I think the big thing for me is putting our guys in position where we can evaluate them… We’ll continue to put them in some situations. But ultimately, we’d love to make a decision sooner than later.”

This ambiguity has only intensified interest in the Browns’ quarterback room, particularly because most NFL teams enter training camp with a starter already named. With Watson out, the field remains wide open, creating both opportunity and pressure for all four candidates.

Meanwhile, Flacco is keeping his mindset straightforward, choosing to concentrate on what lies within his control. Regardless of whether that earns him the starting role, he appears willing to stay patient and let the situation unfold over time.
