Way back, when Tom Brady Sr. heard some comments that now-former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made about his son, seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady, he was not happy at all.
Even years later after the incident, Brady Sr. just isn’t letting what Belichick said about his son go.
Bill Belichick’s Comments Not Forgotten by Tom Brady Sr.
Back in the 2018 NFL season, Brady dealt with a hand injury that was a concern, to say the least. After a Patriots win, Belichick was asked if Brady’s injury might have impacted his play.
Commenting after the game, Belichick said, “Not that I’m aware of. I mean, look, Tom did a great job and he’s a tough guy. We all know that, all right? But we’re not talking about open-heart surgery here.”
Brady Sr. appeared on the Untold Patriots Stories podcast this week and was asked to share his thoughts going back to that saga. It’s safe to say Brady Sr. did not hold back in addressing Belichick’s stance.
“That was a very shallow shot for somebody that should’ve known better,” Brady Sr. said.
“He’d had a ton of stitches that tore his hand apart in the course of the week. As the kickoff was occurring, he was in the locker room trying to cut the stitches in his hand down so that they did not impede his throwing ability.
“Frankly, it was a very heroic effort,” Brady Sr. continued. “He should not have been playing.
“Bill was rather insensitive to it. The reality is that Bill is a very pragmatic, tough coach,” Tom Brady’s father said. “He realized that quarterbacks have an expiration date. When he picked Jimmy Garoppolo, and made a comment at the press conference, ‘We know how old our QB is, they don’t play for a long time, they don’t play till they’re 45.’
“For a good part of his career, Belichick was right,” Brady Sr. said. “Unfortunately, or fortunately for Tommy, he was wrong, because he played another 10 years after that.”
After his time with the Patriots ended in the 2019 NFL season, all he did was go down to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He took a franchise that hadn’t been to the Super Bowl in a stretch and helped the Buccaneers reach the Super Bowl, coming away with the final Super Bowl ring of his illustrious career.
One might wonder if Brady is still as upset about this as his father. It’s nice, though, to have a beloved family member watching your back.
