Tom Brady Looked Sharp, but Team USA Embarrassed the NFL Stars at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic

Team USA went 3-0 at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic, dominating Tom Brady and Joe Burrow's NFL squads 106-44 in combined scoring.

Tom Brady completed touchdown passes, looked every bit like a 48-year-old who never stopped throwing footballs, and still lost badly. So did Joe Burrow, Jayden Daniels, and Jalen Hurts. Team USA ran through all of them Saturday at the inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Classic at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, going 3-0 and outscoring its NFL-star opponents 106-44 across three games.

Why Team USA Was on a Different Level Than the NFL Stars

None of the NFL players were ready for what hit them. Team USA quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette scored 6 touchdowns and won MVP. Team USA scored on 14 of its 15 possessions across the round-robin tournament and championship.

The final scoreline in each game told the story: 43-16 over Brady’s Founders in the round-robin, 39-14 over Burrow’s Wildcats in the opening game, and 24-14 in the championship rematch.

“Those guys that we competed against, they didn’t know what they were getting themselves into,” Doucette III said, his voice breaking postgame. “They just thought that they were going to come out and play. But I think we gained a lot of respect from those guys.”

The NFL players ran into a wall of rules they did not know, and athletes were built for the precise demands of flag football. A 50-yard field punishes linear speed. It rewards lateral quickness, route running on a compressed surface, and flag-pulling instincts that take years to develop. The pros had two days of practice. Doucette has built his life around this game.

“With that 5-vs-5 field, it’s not as big as a natural football field,” Doucette said. “You can’t get into the deep balls like they’re accustomed to. A 40-yard dash doesn’t mean anything. It’s 50 yards. You’re only going to run 40 yards when you run down the field to the end zone.”

Odell Beckham Jr., playing with the Wildcats, offered one of the day’s signature moments: a one-handed touchdown catch for a 2-point conversion off a Jayden Daniels pass with multiple defenders draped on him. It was vintage Beckham, the kind of play that reignites conversations about whether he belongs in an NFL training camp this summer.

Tom Brady Shines but Rules Out Playing in 2028 Olympics

Brady’s Founders went 0-2. His final stat line: 8-of-12 for 61 yards, 2 touchdowns, 0 interceptions. On the opening drive of the event, Brady sidestepped a pass rusher and drilled a dart to Stefon Diggs in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. The arm is fine, the instincts are fine, and the 7-time Super Bowl champion still has it.

Rob Gronkowski did not. The former tight end tweaked his hamstring on a 2-point conversion reception from Brady in the first game and did not return. Gronkowski later told the broadcast he did not think the injury was serious.

Brady addressed the 2028 Olympics directly and ruled himself out as a player. “I would love to play some role in USA flag football, but it won’t be on the field,” he said. On the question of whether current NFL stars could earn spots on Team USA by 2028, he left the door open while acknowledging the amount of work that would be required.

“There’s going to be a selection process, and may the best people play,” Brady said. “That’s the best thing about team sports, it’s a meritocracy. Whoever gives the team the best opportunity to win, that’s who should be out there.”

Based on what Saturday showed, the NFL’s best are a long way from earning those spots. Team USA built the kind of case that is hard to argue with: 14 scoring drives, zero mercy, and a teary MVP who proved he belonged on the same field as the most famous football players alive.
