On Wednesday morning, The New York Times released a lengthy article regarding Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel’s alleged affair.
The piece dives deeper into the scandal that has dominated headlines this offseason, and there’s one detail that raised some major questions.
Did Mike Vrabel’s Assistant Coaches Know About Alleged Affair With Dianna Russini?
The bombshell report details the various photos and videos that have been published showing Vrabel and Russini together.
“After that news conference, The Post published more photos, reportedly taken six years ago in a Manhattan bar,” the article reads. “Then other images dribbled out via TMZ, the online tabloid: a June 2021 TMZ video that showed a noticeably pregnant Ms. Russini with Mr. Vrabel on a dock at Center Hill Lake near Nashville, where they went on a boat trip; the two of them huddled at a 2022 party in Los Angeles; laughing together at a casino table in Mississippi in January 2024. (Ms. Russini’s friend said that members of Mr. Vrabel’s coaching staff were with them at the casino, but were not visible in the photo.)”
That last sentence is the most interesting. This occurred weeks after the Tennessee Titans fired Vrabel as their head coach, but his coaching staff was reportedly in attendance at the casino. If his assistant coaches were at the casino with Vrabel and Russini, could they have really been kept in the dark about the alleged affair? Did they just think that Vrabel and Russini were hanging out as friends?
Once this scandal was exposed, there has been speculation that many people around the NFL and in sports media knew about the alleged relationship and turned a blind eye to it.
Investigative reporter Pablo Torre previously reported that Russini and Vrabel hosted a day-drinking party together at the NFL’s league meetings with numerous head coaches in attendance.
“All of these head coaches across the pool and their wives, I’m told, started talking about Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini,” Torre stated. “And this is days before the photos broke in the New York Post… Their friendship was not breaking news to the people at the owners’ meetings. They all knew.”
The New York Times article provides some additional details on this pool party: “On the patio of the Arizona Biltmore, she ferried drinks between the bar and an informal klatch that included Mr. Vrabel and other head coaches. According to two people who were there, she periodically stopped to sit on the arm of the sofa next to where Mr. Vrabel sat.”
Despite the backlash from the controversy, Vrabel remains the Patriots’ head coach as New England’s brass and players have publicly backed him.
Vrabel played 14 seasons in the NFL, including eight years for New England, where he won three Super Bowls. He’s now been a head coach in the league for seven years. In his first season with the Patriots, he won the league’s Coach of the Year award after helping New England win 10 more games than the previous campaign (tied for the best single-season turnaround in NFL history) and leading the Pats to the Super Bowl.

Russini, on the other hand, resigned from The Athletic in the aftermath of the scandal. She is not currently working, and leaked text messages suggest she is considering a career change.
