The Pittsburgh Steelers’ matchup against the Green Bay Packers might be one of the most emotional games of the season. Since the talk began about Aaron Rodgers moving to his third team in four years, fans had been expecting this. Now, under the bright lights of a Sunday Night Football encounter, Rodgers is set to go up against his former team.
Spending 18 seasons with the organization and leading them to a Super Bowl victory was marred by an ugly exit and divorce that left an uneasy outlook over the entire tenure. The NFL would try its best to make the game a special showcase. The Steelers, too, had something planned for the game: a unique first-ever jersey. Unfortunately, it did not go over well with the larger football fan base.
Why Did the Steelers’ New Jerseys Create Such Backlash?
Rather than opting for the shades of white or black that tend to dominate their uniforms, Pittsburgh went a unique route with these jerseys. Made in yellow with black stripes adorning the front, the top was an eyesore.
Add weirdly pale yellow pants complementing the tops, and the end product wasn’t an appetizing watch. The lamenting was almost immediate as the fans saw the Steelers practicing in those uniforms.
One fan hilariously wrote, “Whoever gave the green light to these uniforms, needs to be fired, immediately,” while another blamed the old stylist who originally approved these pieces.
“These throwback Steelers uniforms are ugly as hell. Did they have a blind uniform designer back in the day?” However, for some, there was a silver lining to the entire ensemble, as a matte-finish yellow helmet carried a certain class with it.
But for others, it was hard to move past the outfit itself. As one fan complained, “The Steelers uniform looks so bad,” another agreed, “Steelers uniform ruined my night.” For some, though, the ridiculous color palette was going to take away from one of the most iconic nights in recent NFL history.
“The more eyeballs on them, the more potential purchases, I get it. But these Steelers’ unis are BAD. This GB/Rodgers game will be photographed and remembered forever. And he looks SO DUMB in this ridiculous uniform. Plus, the Packers’ all-white look is just not appealing either”.
Some were even ready to declare these “the worst uniform I have ever seen,” as another believed it was a longstanding problem of the franchise to make these decisions. “Every year the Steelers come up with another monstrosity of a uniform”.
As one fan alluded, the game would be a major part of history. Considering that, the Steelers’ choice of cartoonish-looking jersey was probably not the best choice. Ultimately, the colors would fade into the background, and fans would remember only the game itself.
