Officiating controversies have been part of nearly every NFL season in recent memory, but now, the league is taking action in a way fans haven’t seen before. Three referees — James Carter, Robin DeLorenzo, and Robert Richeson — have been removed from the league’s officiating roster and reassigned to the college football ranks. The move comes after several high-profile mistakes and growing frustration from coaches, players, and fans alike.
While NFL firings aren’t unusual in most roles, officiating jobs have historically been more secure, even amid public criticism. That’s why this particular decision is drawing praise. Former NFL offensive lineman-turned analyst and sportscaster Ross Tucker is among those applauding the move.

Ross Tucker: NFL Officiating Shakeup Sends ‘Much-Needed Message’ to Struggling Officials
On a recent segment of “The Ross Tucker Football Podcast” on the DraftKings Network podcast, Tucker gave a blunt but fair take on the decision: “I never root for people to get fired. I’m never happy when people get fired. That said, this is really good news for the NFL because the officials need to be held accountable, as well.”

Tucker made it clear this isn’t about punishment for its own sake — it’s about standards. “If there are three that are not up to the standard of being NFL officials, then they should be let go,” he said. “And, in this case, they’re not even losing their jobs — they’re still gonna have good jobs at the college level.”
In his view, the move sends a much-needed message. “It’s just nice to know that when we watch some of the bad calls [in the NFL], that every single thing these officials do is monitored,” Tucker explained. “It’s not just you get downgraded, you can’t do a playoff game. You can actually lose your job if you’re not performing up to task. I think that’s a very positive thing for the NFL.”
NFL Officials Reassigned to College Ranks as League Cracks Down on Standards
According to several reports (first reported by Football Zebras), the NFL has removed three officials from its roster after mounting pressure over officiating standards: Carter (umpire), DeLorenzo (line judge), and Richeson (down judge) have been relegated to the college football ranks after underwhelming performances in their brief NFL careers.
While this isn’t the first time officials have been let go, it’s the first time the NFL has sent them back to power conferences rather than just terminating their contracts.
This unprecedented move signals a more aggressive approach by the NFL to improve officiating after many complaints from players, coaches, and fans. Previous seasons were marked by controversial calls that many believe impacted key outcomes.
The move continues George’s insistence that data be the ultimate performance guideline. Speaking to Football Zebras anonymously, one NFL official discussed the current officiating landscape.
“The culture is changing, it’s changing rapidly. It’s changing into a competitive environment where everybody’s equal. There are no favorites. There’s no favoritism. There’s none of that; it’s all about performance.”
The three officials bypassed the NFL Referees Association’s grievance procedures by accepting reassignment to the college level. Whether they can work their way back into the league through the officiating development program remains to be seen.
