Former 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, coming off a season with the Washington Commanders, remains a free agent, and that has only fueled talk about a possible return to the Bay Area. The idea gained even more traction after former teammates George Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk openly backed a reunion.
However, the conversation took a different turn after former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho shut down the idea, calling Samuel a “glorified mascot.” The comments quickly reached Samuel, who fired back on social media.
As a result, Acho apologized for part of his criticism while standing by his overall football opinion.

The whole controversy started when Acho explained why he opposed Samuel’s move to the 49ers.
“When you construct the roster, Deebo would now be the third receiver in San Francisco,” Acho said on the “Speakeasy” podcast.
“That third receiver has to play special teams. You want to know who’s not playing special teams, nor should? Deebo Samuel… I’m also not gonna stunt the growth of first-round pick, third-year player, Ricky Pearsall for Deebo Samuel.”
From Acho’s perspective, the 49ers should prioritize Pearsall’s development instead of revisiting the past.

“I’m not gonna pay a glorified mascot top tier money… if you a hype man, I’m not paying you to be a hype man. I’m paying you to get 1,400 yards.”
Samuel wasted little time responding and pushing back against the former linebacker’s remarks.
“Who is bruh?” Samuel wrote. “Who gave him a voice? You play 3 years gang, 3 different teams. Ain’t coming at you but stop trying me bruh.”
Now, Acho took to X and tried to clear the air while maintaining his stance.
“You right @19problemz .. glorified mascot was wildly disrespectful, apologies,” he wrote.
“Here’s context & the truth still remains: you’re too big time & legendary to play special teams, but a #3 WR has to play teams.”

Right now, for the 49ers, Ricky Pearsall and veteran addition Mike Evans project as the top outside targets entering the season. Meanwhile, Christian Kirk appears set to handle slot duties after joining San Francisco in free agency.
Because of that, Acho believes there simply is not a clear path for Samuel in San Francisco’s offense.
Still, Samuel’s production should not be overlooked. When healthy, he still creates problems for opposing defenses with his versatility.
He finished No. 26 in PFN’s Wide Receiver Impact Metric in 2025 after catching 72 of 99 targets for 727 yards and 5 touchdowns.
At 30 years old, the free agent remains one of the strongest receiving options still available, especially for teams searching for an experienced playmaker. Because of that, several clubs beyond the 49ers could enter the conversation, like the Giants or Dolphins.
For now, though, his future remains uncertain, and the next chapter will depend on which team decides his skill set still fits its plans.
