Texas WR Matthew Golden Opens Up About Meeting ‘Legendary’ Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones

Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden is continuing his tour across the Lone Star State ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. One of the most memorable stops came during his visit with the Dallas Cowboys, where he had a chance to meet the team’s iconic owner, Jerry Jones.

Matthew Golden Reflects on Memorable Meeting with Cowboys’ Jerry Jones

Appearing on the “Up & Adams” with Kay Adams, Golden couldn’t hide his excitement when asked about the experience.

“Why is it every time that I ask a prospect and I even just say the name Jerry Jones, their faces light up like the one that your face just lit up,” Adams said.

Golden smiled and responded, “Yeah, yeah. I mean, that’s Jerry Jones. You know, he kind of legendary, you know what I’m saying? So, great guy. You know, I had the opportunity to meet him, but you know, just being there, being able to meet Jerry, you know, it was cool. It was a cool moment for me.”

Golden shared a personal moment from the meeting that stood out in a room full of NFL executives.

“Yeah, he told me to call my mom,” Golden recalled. “So I ended up calling her, FaceTimed her. I was like, I got a surprise for you and Jerry, Coach Jerry was talking to her.” Laughing, he added, “I called him Coach Jerry.”

When asked what Jones told his mother, Golden said, “He was just talking to her, you know, just telling her she raised a great young man. You know, all the hard work paid off and she did a tremendous job with me.”

The Cowboys appear to be seriously considering Golden with their No. 12 overall pick. He recently visited The Star practice facility in Frisco, Texas. where Jones personally welcomed him.

That level of attention suggests the Cowboys are seriously looking at adding him to a wide receiver room that already includes CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, and KaVontae Turpin.

Golden’s performance at the University of Texas backs up the interest. In his lone season in Austin, he posted 58 catches for 987 yards and nine touchdowns — all career highs. During his two seasons at Houston, he totaled 76 receptions for 988 yards and 13 touchdowns, and also returned two kickoffs for scores.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke about Golden’s development over the past year.

“I would say Matthew’s a great example of early on, he was struggling with the offense … And as the season went on … mentally, things slowed down and calmed down for him … it made more sense to him, and it’s just continued on throughout this draft process.”

As the draft approaches, Golden’s meeting with Jerry Jones might just be the beginning of something bigger in Dallas.
