The Houston Texans have been without star running back Joe Mixon for the entirety of the 2025 season so far. The veteran has been dealing with a foot injury since training camp, and there’s been little clarity as to when he could return.
General manager Nick Caserio appeared on Houston radio on Tuesday morning and was asked about Mixon’s status. The executive’s answer didn’t clarify much and now fans are beginning to think they’ll never see Mixon suit up in Houston again.
Nick Caserio’s Update Has Fans Thinking the Worst
Last month, Caserio said he anticipated knowing more about Mixon in three or four weeks. Well, it’s been three or four weeks, which is why Caserio was asked again.
It’s a very gray situation. Joe’s worked at it,” Caserio said on SportsRadio 610. “There were times where he’s made progress and other times when the progress has stalled. Obviously, we’re getting pretty late in the game here. I don’t want to establish any sort of expectations.”
Obviously, that’s not a very encouraging update. There are still seven regular season games left to be played, and Mixon would provide a big boost as the Texans go for a playoff spot.
“I don’t think we have anymore clarity at this point,” Caserio added. “He’s out until he’s not.”
Fans naturally took to social media to share their reaction to Caserio’s comments. Reactions ranged from optimistic to extreme disappointment.
One fan speculated, “Joe’s done. They will tell us at the end of the season presser.” This was a common sentiment shared by commenters.
“Translation: Joe Mixon won’t play football this year,” another fan posited.
Another user mentioned that it doesn’t make sense for the team not to just announce that he’s out for the season. This same user also mentioned that it’s still unknown how Mixon suffered the injury in the first place.
“How do the Texans benefit from just not announcing he’s out for the season? Or better yet, why don’t they share how he got injured?”
Finally, one fan suggested trading Mixon and drafting Jeremiyah Love, while another guessed that Caserio truly doesn’t know if Mixon will be back.
it sounds to me like this is just, in terms of his availability, the professional way of saying “we dont really know”.
usually he would hint some things one way or another, to temper expectations but this one doesn’t feel that way.

“Trade him and gimme Jeremiyah Love this offseason”.

Mixon is technically under contract for next season, but the team could cut the veteran this offseason and only end up with $2 million in dead money.
2024 was a solid season for Mixon, though. In his first year with the Texans, Mixon rushed for over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns. Without Mixon in 2025, veteran Nick Chubb is leading the way with 419 yards on the ground so far.
