However, one AFC team stands out as the perfect match for both McLaurin’s career ambitions and their own championship aspirations. McLaurin has quietly established himself as one of the NFL’s most consistent weapons over the past five seasons. His resume speaks for itself: five consecutive 1,000-yard receiving campaigns and the partnership with Jayden Daniels elevated McLaurin’s game to new heights this past season.
He transformed into both a deep threat and red zone weapon, hauling in 13 touchdowns while earning his first Second-Team All-Pro selection. That combination of reliability and explosive playmaking ability is exactly what makes him so valuable on the trade market.
Contract negotiations between McLaurin and Washington reached an impasse this offseason, prompting his formal trade request.

The New England Patriots have quickly emerged as a frontrunner for his services, and the fit makes perfect sense for both sides. USA Today‘s Jacob Camenker highlighted why McLaurin would thrive in New England’s offensive system:
“McLaurin’s well-rounded skill set would pair well with Drake Maye and could help the second-year starter take a big step forward in 2025. The 29-year-old would also pair well with Diggs and allow New England’s intriguing, young receivers time to develop and jockey for position on the depth chart,” Camenker wrote.
The addition of McLaurin would immediately solve New England’s need for a true number one receiver. His arrival would take significant pressure off Stefon Diggs, who no longer carries the same explosiveness that made him a premier target earlier in his career. Instead of forcing Diggs into a role he can no longer handle, the Patriots could utilize him as a complementary weapon alongside McLaurin.
This scenario becomes even more compelling when considering Drake Maye’s development. The young quarterback showed flashes of his potential during the 2024-25 campaign, and surrounding him with elite talent like McLaurin could accelerate his growth significantly. The Patriots recognize that maximizing Maye’s abilities requires giving him legitimate weapons to work with.
To land McLaurin, the Patriots would likely have to give up a first-round pick and possibly a late-rounder to complete the deal, given he’s coming off his best NFL season. His new contract could exceed $34 million per year, a figure New England would have to absorb.
