Let's take a look the career of Irish umpire Fergus Murphy, who made headlines after a clash with Carlos Alcaraz during the Japan Open 2025 final.

Tennis officials rarely find themselves in the spotlight, but the Irish chair umpire Fergus Murphy became the center of attention during the Japan Open 2025 final. The veteran official’s strict enforcement of timing rules sparked a heated exchange with world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz.

What Happened During Carlos Alcaraz’s 2025 Japan Open Final?

Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the Japan Open final on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, capturing his eighth title of the season. Despite the straight-sets victory, a tense confrontation between Alcaraz and the chair marked the match, as umpire Murphy disagreed over the automatic shot clock timing.

The controversy erupted early through the second set. After finishing a point at the net, Murphy quickly started the 25-second shot clock, leading to a time violation for the Spanish player. Alcaraz became visibly frustrated with the rapid timing and launched into a heated argument with Murphy during the changeover.

“Do you think this is normal? You never played tennis in your life!” Alcaraz shouted at Murphy, clearly agitated by what he perceived as unreasonably fast clock timing. The world No. 1 continued his complaints, arguing that finishing points at the net requires extra time to return to the baseline, which should be factored into the shot clock implementation.

Despite the heated exchange, Alcaraz maintained his composure on court and secured the victory. Fritz had already commented that he had similar issues with Murphy’s timing at the Shanghai Masters last year, stating he “always had a problem, particularly with Fergus” because Murphy would start the clock quickly.

Who is the Irish Chair Umpire Murphy?

Murphy, a 54-year-old Dublin native, is one of tennis’s most experienced chair umpires. With over 30 years in the profession, he began his career at local tournaments in Ireland during the 1980s while studying to be a barrister. Murphy obtained his Gold Badge status in 2001, making him an elite ATP chair umpire worldwide.

Murphy’s career reached its pinnacle when he became the first Irishman to officiate a Wimbledon men’s singles final, presiding over the epic 2023 championship match between Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. The five-set thriller lasted four hours and 42 minutes, with Murphy maintaining control throughout the intense encounter despite some debates over time violations.

However, Murphy’s strict interpretation of rules has generated numerous controversies throughout his career. His most publicized clashes have involved Nick Kyrgios, who has repeatedly called Murphy “the worst ref in the game” in Cincinnati. In 2019, Kyrgios received a violation from Murphy for timing issues. They called the umpire a “potato with legs” in Washington.

The Irish official has also faced criticism from other top players. In 2024, Stefanos Tsitsipas told Murphy, “You have no clue about tennis” during the Shanghai Masters, accusing him of lacking compassion for players’ physical demands. Rafael Nadal clashed with Murphy at the 2024 Madrid Open when the umpire refused to allow a challenge, leading Nadal to demand a supervisor.
