What Did Iga Świątek’s Opponent Eva Lys Say to Her Box About the Pole? Everything to Know About the Exchange During Montreal Defeat

Eva Lys has disclosed the message she shared with her box during her straight sets defeat to Iga Świątek at the ongoing National Bank Open.

World No. 3 Iga Świątek, fresh off her first title at Wimbledon, needed just 20 minutes to have her opponent joking about the inevitable. When Eva Lys barely managed to win four games in their lopsided match at the 2025 National Bank Open in Montreal, she found humor in the demolition rather than despair.

Eva Lys Reveals Humorous Message for Her Box Amid Demolition by Iga Świątek

Lys turned to social media after her defeat to reveal what she told her box early in the match. When a user on X shared a clip from the first game showing Świątek moving Lys side to side with penetrating groundstrokes, the caption read, “Iga has Eva running marathons already.”

Lys responded with perfect timing: “Legit what i said to my box 20 mins into the match.” The German’s self-deprecating humor continued throughout the contest as she even appeared to celebrate winning her third game in the second set, a moment that tennis fans found endearing.

The celebration had context. When the 23-year-old Lys faced Świątek at the 2022 Stuttgart Open, she managed to win only two games. By that measure, winning four games represented genuine progress.

“It’s always fun here,” Świątek said in her post-match interview. “It was a solid match, so I’m happy to have a chance to play another one here. The match was different from how we played each other last time. I just focused on myself and knew what my plan was, but Eva played some great down-the-lines and sometimes was really able to use her wrist and play some fast balls.”

Following the win, Świątek praised Lys for keeping things light even in defeat. The Polish star revealed that Lys shared a joke with her at the net after the match.

“She joked that she won more games than last time, so it was kind of funny,” Świątek explained. “She’s a really nice girl with a lot of down-to-earth humor, so I appreciate that. At first, I didn’t hear her. These exchanges at the net are always kind of, like, awkward. I like her humor, so for sure it was funny.”

The victory pushed Świątek into the fourth round at the Canadian Open for the first time since 2022. She’s now riding a nine-match winning streak and has won 12 of her last 13 matches.

Next up is Clara Tauson, the 16th-seeded Danish player who’s enjoying one of the most successful seasons of her career.
