Victoria Mboko and Mirra Andreeva: From Junior Circuit Foes to Top 10 Mainstays

Mboko vividly remembers her first real interaction with the young Russian. Andreeva arrived on the junior scene a little later than her peers. She immediately made her presence felt by dismantling Mboko.

“Mirra and I have been good friends since our junior days,” Mboko said during her recent appearance on “The Changeover Podcast”. “I remember her since I was like 14. She came to juniors a bit later than everyone else.”

Despite their differing trajectories and obvious competitive ambitions, a genuine connection formed almost immediately between the two rising stars.

“She’s a year younger than me, but she was a super sweet girl,” Mboko said.

Their first official encounter on the court was completely one-sided. Andreeva dominated the match from the opening serve, showcasing the smooth movement and tactical brilliance that now make her a top prospect on the WTA tour.

“I played with her in one junior match and lost,” Mboko said. “She beat me in straight sets, and the next day was my birthday.”

Losing a lopsided match right before a personal milestone often leaves young competitors with lingering resentment. The sting of defeat is hard to shake, especially when you are flying home immediately afterward. Instead, Andreeva sent an unexpected birthday message that completely changed the trajectory of their relationship.

“I was on the plane home, and she sent me a really sweet birthday message,” Mboko said. “I’d never talked to this girl before.”

The gesture caught the Canadian player completely off guard. “I was like, this girl beat me so badly, and I couldn’t help it, but she is a sweet girl,” Mboko said.

That single message laid the foundation for a lasting partnership. They began seeking each other out at subsequent events, prioritizing their practice sessions together over hitting with other players. They pushed each other to improve while climbing the developmental ranks side by side.

“So every tournament after that, we hit with each other a lot more often,” Mboko said. “At some point, I was only hitting with her in junior tournaments.”

Those practice sessions paid massive dividends for both teenagers. Andreeva broke through first on the professional stage. The Russian sensation reached the French Open semifinals at age 17 and began knocking off established Grand Slam champions with remarkable poise.

“Seeing her, she also had an insane rise in 2023, where she was winning a lot. It was really nice to see and motivating,” Mboko said.

Mboko quickly followed suit with a spectacular run of her own and captured her first WTA 1000 title in Montreal in 2025. The Canadian also leads 2-1 in their head-to-head record, including their last meeting in Miami.
