Victoria Mboko stood at center court in Doha and tried to put into words what had just unfolded. Moments after toppling reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina in a gripping three-set quarterfinal at the 2026 Qatar Open, the 19-year-old described her week in a single word: “insane.”
Victoria Mboko Shocked by Her Own Doha Triumph After Beating Elena Rybakina
At the Qatar Open in Doha, Mboko arrived as the 10th seed and World No. 13, already on the brink of breaking into the Top 10 for the first time. She opened her campaign with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Marie Bouzkova, then followed it by defeating veteran Vera Zvonareva 6-4, 6-4. In the Round of 16, she faced rising star Mirra Andreeva in a rematch of the Adelaide International final. Mboko saved a match point and battled through a tense 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) victory.
Her biggest test came in the quarterfinals against the second seed, Rybakina. The Kazakh tennis star fired 11 aces and dictated stretches of the match with her power, yet Mboko refused to yield. After dropping the second set and falling behind by a break in the decider, she steadied herself and surged back to win 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. The result evened their head-to-head record at 2-2 and improved Mboko’s 2026 season tally to 12-3.

Still processing the moment during her on-court interview, Mboko said, “This week has been insane. I never expected such a result for myself. I’ve just been taking it day by day.”
She praised her opponent, adding, “It was a great match with Elena. She has a pretty good record right now. To play this match is really an honor to share the court with her. Hopefully, I can play her so many more times in the future.”
