Victoria Mboko, Alexandra Eala Were Both on Losing Streaks Before Hong Kong
Following her surprise title victory at the National Bank Open in August, Victoria Mboko endured a rough patch in her next four tournaments. The Canadian went on a four-match losing streak before a return to form at the Pan Pacific Open last week, where she reached the quarterfinals.
Looking to end her 2025 season on a high note, the World No. 21 fought hard in her first-round match in Hong Kong on Tuesday. She overcame Australia’s Talia Gibson to prevail 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-4, winning her fifth match from a set down this year.
Alexandra Eala, meanwhile, is also in dire need of a reversal of fortunes at this week’s Hong Kong Open. The Filipino had endured a four-match losing streak between the WTA 125 tournament in Suzhou and the Guangzhou Open.
Luckily for her, the 20-year-old received safe passage into the second round in Hong Kong on Tuesday after her opponent, Katie Boulder, retired due to injury while trailing 4-6, 1-2. She will be eager to beat her younger opponent next and add to her 2025 highlights, which include winning her maiden WTA 125 title in Guadalajara, reaching her first-ever tour-level final in Eastbourne, and reaching the semifinals of the Miami Open.
Mboko vs Eala Head-to-Head
Victoria Mboko and Alexandra Eala both played their first full-tour season this year. Considering how they are both in a very nascent stage of their respective careers, it doesn’t come as a surprise that they are yet to face off in a competitive match.
Therefore, their head-to-head record stands at 0-0.
Mboko vs Eala Prediction
During her first-round win on Tuesday, Victoria Mboko hit all her spots on serve as she hit 19 aces and won nearly 80% (56/71) of her first-serve points. And while the 19-year-old did double-fault nine times, her return game was solid enough to ensure that she converted four of her five break points across three sets. Needless to say, the third seed is well-rounded in all departments of the game, be it serve-return dynamics or her baseline game.
However, the teen prodigy will have to put together a much more composed display mentally against Alexandra Eala on Thursday. The World No. 51 has a lefty advantage over her younger opponent, which is complemented by her aggressive intent from the baseline. Moreover, she is a gritty customer and doesn’t let go of points easily.
The keys to winning this match for both players will be to establish dominance in rally patterns early on and secure their respective ends of the court with good positioning and effective shotmaking. Although Mboko is the better player on paper, Eala is likely to edge this match in three sets owing to her superior experience.
Prediction: Alexandra Eala to win in three sets.
