How Did the USTA Revamp the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Format?
In an effort to elevate the profile of mixed doubles, the United States Tennis Association introduced significant changes to the tournament format. The competition was condensed into two days, featuring 16 teams and incorporating innovations such as no-ad scoring, shorter sets, and match tiebreaks.
The overhaul was designed to attract high-profile singles players, and the results were evident. The lineup included marquee names like Naomi Osaka, Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu, Novak Djokovic, Iga ÅšwiÄ…tek, and Ben Shelton, among others.
The revamped format proved to be a resounding success, both in terms of fan engagement and competitive play. The final saw Italian duo Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori defend their title against the third-seeded team of Swiatek and Casper Ruud. Errani and Vavassori clinched the victory 6-3, 5-7, 10-6, marking a rare back-to-back championship in US Open mixed doubles.
