The 2026 tennis season officially commences with the fourth edition of the United Cup, the premier mixed team event that unites the world’s elite players. Running from January 2 to January 11, this high-stakes tournament spans two Australian cities, offering massive ranking points and serving as the vital lead-up to the Australian Open.
2026 United Cup Structure and Host Cities
The action unfolds across two iconic venues: RAC Arena in Perth and Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney. The event features 18 nations divided into six groups of three, with matches played in a round-robin format.
Each tie between countries consists of three matches, namely one in men’s singles, one in women’s singles, and one in mixed doubles. The singles matches follow a best-of-three sets format, while the mixed doubles is decided by a 10-point match tiebreak if the score reaches one set all.
Group winners from both cities automatically advance to the quarterfinals. The remaining two spots in the final eight are awarded to the best-performing runner-up from Perth and the best runner-up from Sydney.
Following the group stages, the qualified teams will head to Sydney for the semifinals and the final on January 11. This unique format tests national depth, requiring countries to field strong competitors on both the ATP and WTA sides to succeed.
The Groups, Teams, and United Cup History
The 2026 draw features a loaded field, headlined by the defending champions, Team USA. After reclaiming the title in 2025 with a victory over Poland, the top-seeded Americans return with Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff leading the charge in Group A (Perth), where they face Spain and Argentina.
Also in Perth, Group C sees Italy (led by Jasmine Paolini) battle France and Switzerland, which features veterans Stan Wawrinka and Belinda Bencic. Group E includes Great Britain (with Emma Raducanu), Greece (Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari), and debutant Japan, starring Naomi Osaka.
In Sydney, hosts Australia, led by Alex de Minaur, headline Group D against Czechia and Norway. Group F promises intense clashes as 2024 champions Germany (Alexander Zverev) face Poland (Iga ÅšwiÄ…tek) and the Netherlands. Finally, Group B pits Canada, China, and Belgium against one another.
The United States captured its second United Cup title in three years with a commanding 2-0 victory over Poland in the 2025 final at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena. The Americans, who also won the inaugural event in 2023, secured the trophy without needing a deciding mixed doubles rubber.
In the opening match, World No. 3 Gauff delivered a stunning performance against Poland’s Świątek. Continuing her dominance, Gauff triumphed 6-4, 6-4, earning her second consecutive straight-sets win over Świątek following the 2024 WTA Finals.
With a 1-0 lead, Fritz stepped up to seal the championship for Team USA. In a thrilling encounter against the big-serving Hubert Hurkacz, Fritz rallied from a set down to win 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4). His clutch performance in the third-set tiebreak ensured the United States lifted the trophy, leaving Poland as runners-up for the second consecutive year.
