Earlier in the season, Shelton had reached the BMW Open final in Munich, finishing as runner-up to Alexander Zverev.

Her message highlighted the challenges he faced, which saw him battle injury setbacks. During the US Open, the young star was forced to retire in the third round due to a left shoulder issue, abruptly halting what had been a promising run on home soil.
