Paul, seeded 11th at the 2025 Italian Open, began his campaign in the second round, beating Roberto Bautista Agut 6-1, 6-4. He then triumphed over 19th seed Tomáš Macháč with a score of 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 in the third round before securing a solid 7-5, 6-3 win against seventh seed Alex de Minaur to reach the quarterfinals.
This victory over De Minaur was particularly special for Paul, as it marked his first win against the Australian on the ATP Tour. The last time the American won against De Minaur was during the semifinals of the 2015 US Open boys’ singles event, where he dominated with an unforgettable 6-0, 6-0 scoreline. He ultimately finished as the runner-up in that tournament, losing the title to compatriot Taylor Fritz.
Following his win over De Minaur, Paul’s girlfriend, Paige Lorenze, took to social media to celebrate her boyfriend’s progress to the quarterfinals. She shared a video of her partner in action during the match on Instagram.

This is the second time that the 27-year-old has reached the final eight in Rome. He’s defending his semifinal run from last year.

Following his win over Alex de Minaur at the 2025 Italian Open, Paul is set to face 30th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals.
Hurkacz began his campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. In his opening match, the Pole defeated Pedro Martínez with a score of 6-1, 6-5. He overcame Marcos Giron in the third round, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, following which he knocked out Miami champion Jakub Menšík with a scoreline of 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(5) to secure his place in the final eight.
Tommy Paul and Hubert Hurkacz have faced each other thrice on the ATP Tour, with the American emerging victorious on two occasions. Just like this year, their previous clash came in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Italian Open, where Paul triumphed with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
The winner of the upcoming match will advance to face either top seed Jannik Sinner, sixth seed Casper Ruud, or Jaume Munar in the semifinals.
