Taylor Townsend Reveals How Being Pregnant, Having Her Son, and Distancing Herself From Tennis Impacted Her Career

American rising star Taylor Townsend reflects on how having a son improved her perspective on the sport

American professional tennis player Taylor Townsend had an enriching outing at the 2025 US Open. Townsend produced gritty performances in both the singles and doubles events.
She reached the Round of 16 in the singles event but lost in three sets to unseeded challenger Barbora Krejcikova.

In contrast, Townsend reached the summit clash of the women’s doubles event as the No. 1 seed alongside her Czech partner Katerina Siniakova. Unfortunately, the duo tasted defeat against the No. 3 pairing of Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday (September 4).

Taylor Townsend Reflects on How Having a Child Changed Her Perspective Towards the Sport

After the tournament’s conclusion on Sunday, Townsend appeared on the CBS Mornings show and reflected on many aspects of the year’s final Grand Slam. She also highlighted how the tournament made her a better player and how her son, AJ, motivated her on the court.

Speaking about her special bond with her son, Townsend said, “I think since having him, I’ve had something bigger than tennis. I’ve been playing since I was four; I turned pro at 15. Like this has been my livelihood and this is how I’ve provided for myself, and so there was nothing else that was more important than this for me, not only in the moment but later down the road to try and set myself up for a better life.”

She added, “When he came into my life, then it was something that I loved more than the game, but it was ironic because, in a way, getting pregnant and having him and having the distance away from the game allowed me to fall in love with the game again, and I didn’t realize that I needed that space.”

She concluded, “But it’s really weird too because I fell in love with the game again, in the match that I lost in my singles match. Yeah, it was so weird. Like, after I was done playing, I was just like Oh my god, I love this. I can’t wait to go back out, so it was like the loss really motivated me and in a way honestly that I haven’t felt in a really really long time.”

Townsend is a two-time doubles Grand Slam champion and achieved the career high No. 1 seed in women’s doubles alongside triumphant partner Siniakova this year. The duo have previously won the 2024 Wimbledon and 2025 Australian Open.

The 29-year-old has been rising in the singles rankings recently and has found an upbeat rhythm on the court, which has helped her remain consistent. Townsend is a single mother to son Adyn Aubrey, whom she gave birth to on March 14, 2021. She currently resides in Smyrna, GA.
