For Taylor Townsend, her heated confrontation with Jelena Ostapenko during the US Open’s second round was just the beginning of a story that continued in the locker room, where the American was ready for a very different kind of conversation.

Townsend, who made a spirited run to the Round of 16 of the recently concluded US Open, perhaps faced her sternest test when Ostapenko confronted her after losing their second-round encounter. Making a recent appearance on “The Pivot Podcast,” Townsend pulled no punches as she described how she almost had an altercation with Ostapenko in the locker rooms.
The most satisfying part of her controversy with Ostapenko happened after the match, when she had the chance to approach her opponent away from the cameras. Their lockers were positioned right next to each other, setting up what could have been an explosive encounter.
“But the greatest thing was, it was the most satisfying stuff, because when I got off the court, our lockers are right next to each other,” Townsend said. “I hadn’t even gotten off the court yet. I was actually into (Arthur) Ashe Stadium because that’s where our locker rooms are, and her boyfriend was at transport. She was gone because I was ready.
Townsend intended to address the on-court disrespect privately and set a clear boundary about how she expected to be treated.
“I was like, ‘Hey, let me come talk to you for a second.’ I’m having a conversation with you for one second. Like, no cameras, no nothing. Like, let me talk to you. And I was just going to be honest, not disrespectful, but like, ‘Don’t you ever put your finger in my face.'”
Reflecting on her on-court altercation with the Latvian, Townsend admitted her perspective changed when she watched the replay. “I was proud of the way I handled it with my words, but when I watched it again, I’m like ‘You’re pointing at me like I’m a child.'”
What Actually Happened Between Townsend and Ostapenko at the Net?
The controversy began immediately after their match ended. Ostapenko, seeded 25th at the US Open, launched into a flurry of words and was seen pointing her finger at her American opponent after losing the second-round encounter. The crowd quickly got involved, rallying behind Townsend and booing Ostapenko for her conduct.
Ostapenko’s frustration centered on tennis etiquette. During the altercation, Ostapenko told Townsend that she should have apologized for a shot that hit the net cord but still landed in during a crucial moment.
However, what Ostapenko said next escalated the situation far beyond tennis protocol. Townsend later revealed what Ostapenko told her at the net. “She (Ostapenko) told me I have no class. I have no education, and to see what happens when we get outside the U.S.”
Townsend’s response showed her stance on tennis customs and personal responsibility. “If you expect for someone to apologize and they don’t and you get upset about it, that’s your fault, not mine,” Townsend added.
In the wake of the controversy, Jelena Ostapenko took to Instagram to issue an apology, explaining that her reference to “education” was meant to address on-court tennis etiquette and not a broader personal attack, attributing the misunderstanding to English not being her first language while acknowledging her words could have been offensive beyond the court.
