Taylor Townsend Emotional While Revealing Son Adyn’s Unplanned Arrival in New York As She Takes US Open by Storm

Taylor Townsend gets emotional discussing son Adyn's upcoming New York visit after defeating fifth seed Mirra Andreeva at US Open 2025.

Taylor Townsend was supposed to keep her emotions in check. Instead, she let them pour out for the world to see. After stunning fifth-seeded Mirra Andreeva on Friday night, the American revealed why this US Open run means more than any ranking or prize money could capture. Her four-year-old son would be watching from the stands, and that changed everything.

What Did Taylor Townsend Say About Her Son Adyn After Her Match?

After defeating Andreeva 7-5, 6-2 in the third round, Townsend delivered an emotional on-court interview that revealed the deeper meaning behind her breakthrough performance. “God damn, this feels good,” she said, her voice thick with emotion as the magnitude of the moment hit.

The victory marked Townsend’s best US Open performance since 2019, when she reached the fourth round. However, what made this win truly special was what she shared about her son. “I want to dedicate this win to my son, AJ. He’ll be here tomorrow. He was telling his teachers at school, I’m going to New York to see my mom,” Townsend said, her voice breaking with pride and joy.

Adyn Aubrey Johnson, whom Townsend affectionately calls “AJ,” was born in March 2021. The tennis star announced her pregnancy in October 2020, just one month after competing in the US Open, and has been candid about the challenges of balancing motherhood with her professional career. Townsend has never publicly discussed Adyn’s father, choosing to keep that aspect of her personal life private.

The four-year-old has been attending Pre-K and recently started his first year of school. During summer camp earlier this year, Townsend had to address bullying incidents involving Adyn, teaching him to stand up for himself while always reporting issues to teachers first.

How Has Townsend’s Career Reached New Heights in 2025?

Townsend’s current US Open campaign has been nothing short of remarkable. She started by defeating Croatia’s Antonia Ružić in straight sets before her headline-making second-round victory over Jelena Ostapenko. That match became controversial when Ostapenko accused Townsend of having “no class” and “no education” after their encounter.

The American’s run to the fourth round matches her best singles result at Flushing Meadows since 2019. In that breakthrough year, she reached the fourth round by beating Kateryna Baindl, fourth seed Simona Halep, and Sorana Cirstea before falling to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu.

Beyond her singles success, this year has been career-defining for Townsend across all formats. She won Wimbledon doubles in 2024 with partner Kateřina Siniaková and claimed the Australian Open doubles title earlier in 2025. She currently holds the world No. 1 ranking in women’s doubles, making her one of the most successful doubles players on tour.

Townsend is now set to face 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčíková in the fourth round as she hopes to appear in her first US Open quarterfinals.
