American tennis star Taylor Townsend has been a familiar face on the WTA Tour for many years. Known for her aggressive playing style and elite net skills, she continues to make headlines both on and off the court. While she is known for lifting trophies and breaking records in doubles, her recent singles campaign has caught plenty of attention.
However, talking about her coaching split, Townsend refused to answer any questions, stating she is “not ready” to discuss it just yet.
Taylor Townsend “Not Ready” To Talk About Her Coaching Split
Townsend parted ways with her longtime coach, John Williams, in Dec. 2025, which surprised the tennis world given their immense success together over the past few seasons.
During a recent interview, Townsend was asked about the sudden change. However, she refused to give any explanation on the topic, stating she would elaborate on it on her own terms.
“It was an unfortunate situation. I’m not really ready to disclose the details as to exactly what happened. I will, when I’m ready, but right now, I don’t really feel like that’s something I need to talk about, especially while I’m competing.”
She emphasized that she wants to keep things private right now, adding, “And I feel like that’s something personal to me that I want to share my way, and in my own time, and so you’ll know.”

Townsend and Williams had been working together since 2021, and their partnership delivered some of the best results of Townsend’s entire career. Under his guidance, she won two Grand Slam doubles titles, claiming the Wimbledon crown in 2024 and the Australian Open trophy in 2025 alongside Kateřina Siniaková.
She also made history as the first mother to reach the World No. 1 ranking in WTA doubles history. Williams also helped her reach the round of 16 at the 2025 US Open in the singles department, replicating her deepest singles run in any Grand Slam from 2019 in New York.
Following the unexpected split, Townsend has not announced a full-time professional replacement. Interestingly, after reaching the final eight in Austin, she joked that her four-year-old son, Adyn, is her coach, thanking him during the post-match on-court interview. She shared that he gives her simple but effective advice from the stands, reminding her to just hit the ball where her opponent is not standing.
Townsend’s 2026 Season So Far
Despite the team changes, Townsend has had a strong 2026 season thus far. She entered the main draw of the 2026 ATX Open in Austin, Texas, as a wild card and has proven her singles prowess to the entire world.
She opened her campaign with a grueling three-set victory over Linda Fruhvirtova before defeating qualifier Nikola Bartunkova in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Townsend lost the first set despite holding a 5-2 lead initially. However, she mounted an impressive comeback, saving several break points in the next two sets to secure a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
This hard-fought win sent Townsend into the first WTA singles semifinal of her entire career. She had reached the quarterfinals twice on the WTA Tour, in 2024 at the Canadian Open and 2025 at the Washington, D.C., Open, but fell short both times.
She is set to face fellow American Ashlyn Krueger in the semifinals on the Centre Court tonight, Saturday, Feb. 28, and would be looking forward to reaching her first championship match and lifting her first singles WTA title.
