Fans Call Taylor Fritz’s United Cup Move ‘Not Smart’ As Concerning Development Comes Forward

Ahead of starting his United Cup campaign, Fritz revealed that his primary focus was on rehabilitating his knee, an issue that takes a considerable amount of time to resolve. The American admitted the injury continues to linger, but made it clear he is not prepared to step away from competition for an extended period.

Despite battling tendinitis, Fritz enjoyed a rock-solid 2025 season, lifting titles in Eastbourne and Stuttgart, qualifying for the ATP Finals, and finishing the year with an impressive 53–23 win-loss record.

Fritz, however, endured a disappointing start to his United Cup campaign, shockingly falling to World No. 45 Sebastián Báez despite holding a set-and-a-break advantage. The Argentine mounted a strong comeback to clinch the match 4–6, 7–5, 6–4, handing his team the early lead in the tie.

The momentum swung soon after, thanks to Coco Gauff. The World No. 3 first delivered in singles with a straight-sets win over No. 66 Solana Sierra, before returning to the court alongside Christian Harrison to seal the tie. The American duo wrapped up the mixed doubles encounter with a commanding 6–4, 6–1 victory over María Lourdes Carlé and Guido Andreozzi.

Concerns intensified after the match when Fritz was seen speaking with the tournament director about his knee issue. The moment quickly caught attention online, prompting several fans to question his decision to compete at the United Cup with the Australian Open just around the corner.

“True. But he’s playing Brisbane. Tiafoe is also in the top 30 and loves team competitions. The point still stands that I think it’s a bit of a selfish decision to play a team competition when others can step in,” one fan said.

“Well maybe if he didn’t break rackets with the very same knee🤷🏽‍♂️,” a fan joked.

“Why on earth do you participate if you suffer that much from an injury 2 weeks before the first Grand Slam of the season?” A fan questioned.

A fan questioned Fritz’s participation despite injury, arguing it increased pressure on Coco Gauff and Christian Harrison and limited U.S. options, as healthier players could have featured instead.

“Why sign up for a team competition if you’re not 100% sure of your health? Puts a lot of pressure on coco and Harrison. Especially considering that the US could have picked Shelton, Paul, or tien and Fritz could have played one of the 250s this week,” one chimed in.

“He needs to rest up or he won’t be fit for the Australian Open. He should not have taken a chance with an injury,” another wrote.

A fan weighed in, “He’s ether not smart and playing with injury before AO or lying cause he’s mid.”

It’s worth noting that while Fritz managed the injury throughout 2025, this season presents a new challenge, requiring caution ahead of the year’s first Grand Slam, the Australian Open. Should he withdraw from the remaining United Cup matches, compatriot Mackenzie McDonald would likely step in as his replacement.
