Taylor Fritz Reveals US Open Plan Against Novak Djokovic, As He Looks To Snap Streak Just Like Coco Gauff Did Against Iga Świątek

Taylor Fritz envisions taking inspiration from Coco Gauff on how to snap streak against top seeds ahead of US Open clash against Novak Djokovic.

Taylor Fritz is heading to the quarterfinals of the 2025 US Open, but his biggest challenge is still ahead. The No. 4 seed dismantled No. 21 seed Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, on Monday night at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Now, he faces a monumental task: a showdown with the 24-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic.

While Fritz celebrated his victory, Djokovic was also making quick work of his opponent. He defeated unseeded German Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, at Arthur Ashe Stadium, setting up a highly anticipated quarterfinal match on Tuesday.

How Does Taylor Fritz Plan to Overcome His Toughest Test?

Following his win, Taylor Fritz spoke to the media and revealed his strategy for the upcoming match against Novak Djokovic. He drew inspiration from his American compatriot, Coco Gauff, and her success in reversing her losing streak against top players like Iga Swiatek. Fritz believes the key isn’t just a mental shift, but a fundamental improvement in his game.

“The way to turn around is just to become a better player,” Fritz explained during the press conference. “Coco [Gauff] would probably say the same thing. She would probably tell me that she just was better at tennis when she started reversing the head-to-head [against Swiatek]. I’m not thinking about all the losses I had to Novak five years ago.”

He emphasized that his recent performances against Djokovic give him confidence. “I was nowhere near the level of player that I am now,” he continued. “What I’m thinking about fresh in my mind is when we played at the World Tour Finals and the one in Shanghai last year. I served for the set in the World Tour Finals. I had set points serving in Shanghai.”

“I just haven’t been able to make it happen in the important moments of those matches,” Fritz admitted. “That’s what makes the best guys the best guys — they’re not gonna give it to you in those moments you have to go and take it.”

What Is Fritz’s Mindset Against a Grand Slam Champion?

Fritz made it clear that he isn’t underestimating Djokovic, regardless of his age or recent tournament results. He believes the Serbian star elevates his game when it matters most, especially at Grand Slams.

“When he shows up to the Slams, obviously, he is playing as good as tennis as, I haven’t really played him like enough, but, I think the level is still as much there as it was before,” Fritz said. “I don’t look at it like he’s more vulnerable than before. I look at it as the same, but I also look at it that I’ve improved a lot as a player.”

Ultimately, Fritz knows the match will come down to seizing opportunities in critical moments. “The biggest thing that I need to think about that’s different from other matches I played is just in those tight moments, I need to play more to win and not to lose,” he explained, referencing his Wimbledon loss to Carlos Alcaraz. “They’re where they’re at for a reason, they’re not just gonna hand it over to you.”
