The American star admitted the conditions pushed him to his limit, describing his defeat as a humbling experience amid one of the toughest playing environments he has faced all year.
What Challenges Did Taylor Fritz Face During His Shanghai Campaign?
Fritz, seeded fifth in Shanghai, was making his sixth appearance at the ATP Masters 1000 event. After receiving a bye into the second round, the 27-year-old edged past Hungarian Fábián Marozsán in a tight three-set battle, rallying 2-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(1).
His run came to an end in the following round against France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who prevailed 6-4, 7-5. The loss capped a physically demanding week that mirrored the struggles of several top players battling extreme conditions.
In a heartfelt Instagram post after the match, Fritz addressed the toll the tournament had taken on his body and mind. “Brutal conditions out there yesterday — respect to my opponent for a tough, gritty win,” he wrote.
“If u know me, you know I love to compete more than anything. That being said it’s been A LOT lately, and this week it’s clear to me that I’ve hit my limit. Thank you for all the love in Shanghai. It’s time to take a very short and needed rest to recharge and finish the year strong.”

What Made the 2025 Shanghai Masters Conditions So Brutal for Players?
The 2025 edition of the Shanghai Masters was defined by suffocating weather that left players visibly drained. According to local reports, temperatures peaked at 95°F with humidity levels climbing as high as 80%, while the week’s average hovered around 28°C and 75% humidity.
Several competitors, including Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, were seen physically struggling to complete their matches. Sinner, the defending champion, retired in his third-round clash against Tallon Griekspoor due to severe cramps. At the same time, Djokovic vomited mid-match during his win over Yannick Hanfmann, later calling the conditions “some of the toughest” he had experienced in recent years.
Others, like Terence Atmane, Tomáš Macháč, and Hamad Medjedovic, were forced to retire or withdraw due to dizziness, breathing issues, and exhaustion brought on by the oppressive climate.
