‘Doesn’t Make It Less Disappointing’ – Taylor Fritz Makes Feelings Clear on Abandoning Eastbourne Defense at the Last Minute

Taylor Fritz has canceled his appearance at the ATP 250 Eastbourne Open at the last minute, as Wimbledon concerns grow.

Taylor Fritz’s preparations for Wimbledon have taken a hit with his recent withdrawal from the ATP 250 tournament in Eastbourne. The American was the defending champion and has won the title four times in his career (2019, 2022, 2024, and 2025).

After withdrawing from his opening match, Fritz wrote a lengthy message on social media explaining his last-minute no-show.

Taylor Fritz Gives Up Eastbourne Title Defense Ahead of Wimbledon

Fritz’s 2026 season has been far from straightforward. After entering the year with a lingering knee issue, he suffered an oblique injury in January that noticeably hampered his performances. In an effort to fully recover, he opted to take an extended break following the Miami Open.

He made his return at the tail end of the clay-court season, though he went 0–2 in his comeback events. The grass-court swing, however, has told a different story. Fritz made back-to-back finals in Stuttgart and Halle, losing the trophies to compatriots Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, respectively.

He was hoping to carry the momentum at Eastbourne this week, but an apparent adductor issue halted his title defense. The American was slated to face local hope Jan Choinski on Wednesday, June 24.

“Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from Eastbourne this year. I waited up until after the match warmup to make the decision today because I really did want to play. This is never an easy decision for me, especially when it involves a tournament that means so much to me,” he wrote on X.

Over the years, Fritz has built a reputation for competing relentlessly, regularly finishing among the tour’s most active players in terms of tournament appearances.

“Anyone who knows me knows I hate withdrawing from events,” he said, acknowledging the fan support over the years. “That’s what makes this so difficult, but with Wimbledon just around the corner, I have to make the decision that gives me the best chance of being 100% and ready to compete at my best.”

As Fritz relinquishes the 250 ranking points he picked up at Eastbourne last season, his attention now turns to an even greater test at Wimbledon. He collected 800 points as a semifinalist at the tournament last year, where he lost a tight four-setter to Carlos Alcaraz.

“While I know it’s the right call, it doesn’t make it any less disappointing. I’m very sorry to the fans, the tournament, and everyone who was looking forward to seeing me play,” he wrote in his Eastbourne withdrawal message.

Although ranked World No. 7, Taylor Fritz is among the top five contenders at Wimbledon this year given his success on the surface. He has reached seven finals and collected five titles on grass so far in his career. The 2024 US Open runner-up will set his sights on a first Grand Slam crown at SW19 as he looks to regain full fitness ahead of the fortnight.
