Taylor Fritz recently shared his thoughts on a new suggestion being made to the Masters 1000 tournaments amid ongoing scheduling controversies. The former World No. 4 addressed proposals made to ATP President Andrea Gaudenzi to grant two byes in Masters 1000 events for top players, aimed at reducing their workload.
Fritz recently wrapped up his season after participating in the 2025 ATP Finals. He was seeded sixth at the event and began with a victory over Lorenzo Musetti in his first group stage match. However, he lost to Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur in his subsequent matches, which ended his run at the tournament.
Taylor Fritz Makes His Feelings Known on Masters 1000 Suggestion
In a press conference following his match against de Minaur in Turin, Fritz was asked about his opinion on the suggestion made to Gaudenzi. In response, he stated that if there is uncertainty with the entry round of the top players, it would affect the entry cuts for several players.
“I think that idea gets very tough with players deciding if they want to play or not play because then it messes up the entry cuts for some players. Some players don’t know if they’re going to get in, if they’re not going to get in if a player starts in what round,” Fritz said.
Fritz further dismissed the idea of providing two byes to top players, arguing that it would give them an unfair advantage, as they would only need to win a couple of matches to reach the knockout rounds.
“I don’t think the players should get the chance to start that many rounds ahead. That almost gives the top players too much of an advantage. They only need to win a couple matches and they’ll already be in the quarters or the semis,” he added.
Throughout the 2025 season, Fritz secured four titles: two in singles and two in team competitions. At the beginning of the season, he and Coco Gauff helped Team USA win its second title at the United Cup by defeating Team Poland in the final.
The former World No. 4 captured his two singles titles of the season at the 2025 BOSS Open and at the Eastbourne Open by defeating Alexander Zverev and Jenson Brooksby in the finals, respectively.
Fritz secured his final title of the season with Team World by defeating Team Europe in the 2025 Laver Cup. He also finished as the runner-up to Alcaraz at the Japan Open Tennis Championships and reached the semifinals at the Miami Open and the Canadian Open.
In Grand Slam tournaments, Fritz had early exits at the 2025 Australian Open and the French Open, losing in the third and first rounds, respectively. He reached the semifinals at Wimbledon before falling to eventual runner-up Alcaraz and made it to the quarterfinals at the US Open, where he lost to Novak Djokovic.
