The second-round battle was halted due to darkness on Wednesday, with both players having won one set each. After the match resumed on Thursday, Fritz broke Fonseca’s serve and moved ahead in the third set, only to be broken back in the deciding moments. Despite the windy conditions, Fritz eventually secured a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5 win.
Taylor Fritz Oozes Confidence on His Grass-Court Play
After reaching the quarterfinal in Eastbourne, Fritz ran through a quick analysis of his performance on grass. Despite admitting to the fact that the victory over Fonseca came with a lot of trouble, he showcased a massive surge in confidence ahead of Wimbledon.
“Coming out today, it was tough to really judge my grass-court play, there was a lot of scrapping around. I think almost half of my career titles are on grass, which says a lot for how short the grass-court season is. I feel really confident on it, I feel like I can be serving well, taking care of service games when it’s not really windy,” he said.
Out of his nine tour-level titles so far, Fritz has won four on grass. Currently chasing his fourth title in Eastbourne, the American has taken the court against compatriot Marcos Giron for a place in the semifinals.
