Stefanos Tsitsipas Has Shared Details of Tense Split From Father Apostolos

In August 2024, Tsitsipas announced on social media that he had decided to end his coaching partnership with his father, who had been the Greek’s head coach throughout his career.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my collaboration with my father as a coach has come to an end,” he wrote. “I prefer to keep my father in his role as a father, and only as a father.” Tsitsipas’ relationship with his father hit a rocky patch in 2023 and he hired former World No. 8 Mark Philippoussis, only to part with the Aussie two months later and resume his collaboration with his father.

In a recent interview with SDNA, Tsitsipas has come clean about what happened behind the scenes and suggested that he regrets splitting from his father.

“We discussed it, from my side I had to apologize because it was a big mistake on my part,” the Greek said.

He continued, “We have found a new line of communication and a way to talk to each other, so that such things don’t happen again and such tensions don’t arise again.”

The Greek went on to describe the impact his family, particularly his father, has had in his life.

“I love my father with all my heart and what he has done in recent years is truly exciting. He has helped me in my difficult moments, in my most successful and good moments, my family has always been there,” said Tsitsipas. “I don’t want to be separated from them.”

“Tensions may arise again, in the sense that I may feel burdened again, but the relationship I have with my father I will not find anywhere else,” he underlined.

Tsitsipas hired Goran Ivanišević in May amid a push to recapture the form that saw him rise to No. 3 in the world.

However, their relationship appears to have hit a rocky patch following the Croat’s strong criticism of the Greek after a first-round exit at Wimbledon.

What Goran Ivanišević Said About Stefanos Tsitsipas After Greek’s Round 1 Loss at Wimbledon

Talking to Sport Club studio, Ivanišević said he was “shocked” at Tsitsipas’ approach to the game.

“It’s simple and it’s not simple. I’ve talked to him a lot of times. If he solves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and he’ll return to where he belongs, because he’s too good a player to be out of the top 10,” Ivanišević said.

The Croat continued, “He wants, but he doesn’t do anything. All ‘I want, I want’, but I don’t see that progress. I was shocked. I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad.”
