Stefanos Tsitsipas Reveals Being Mistaken for Soccer Player Antoine Griezmann in Chicago

Tsitsipas’s last competition on the ATP Tour was the 2025 US Open. He was seeded 26th at the Grand Slam and started his campaign by defeating Alexandre Müller in the first round. The Greek’s run at the Major came to an end in the following round when he was eliminated by Daniel Altmaier, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7.

After the US Open, the former World No. 3 was scheduled to compete in the 2025 Shanghai Masters and the Vienna Open, but withdrew from both tournaments due to a leg injury and a back injury, respectively. Recently, Tsitsipas took to social media and recounted an amusing incident where a Serbian bicycle taxi driver in Chicago mistook him for Griezmann. When Tsitsipas denied being the soccer player, the driver seemed unconvinced.

“Got picked up by a Serbian bicycle taxi driver in Chicago. He looked me dead in the eye and said, “Antoine Griezmann?” I said no. He winked and said, “Nice try.” I guess I play for Atletico Madrid now,” Tsitsips posted on X.

The Greek later shared a video in which the Serbian bicycle taxi driver, who was also a Djokovic fan, delivered a message for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Reacting to the mix-up, the official social media page of Atlético de Madrid joked about welcoming Tsitsipas as a potential soccer player for their team.

“Welcome to the other side 😏,” Atlético de Madrid commented.

After withdrawing from Shanghai, Tsitsipas participated in the 2025 Six Kings Slam, an exhibition tournament alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, and Alexander Zverev. He lost in the quarterfinals to Sinner.

Tsitsipas Has Withdrawn From the Paris Masters 2025

Following the conclusion of his campaign at the 2025 Six Kings Slam, Tsitsipas was set to compete at the 2025 Paris Masters, scheduled from October 27 to November 2, 2025, on the indoor hard courts of the La Défense Arena in Paris.

However, before the tournament began, the former World No. 3 announced on social media that he was withdrawing from the ATP Masters 1000 hard court tournament and ending his season early to focus on recovery and healing, and make a strong comeback in 2026.

“I’ll be withdrawing from the Rolex Paris Masters this year. I’ve always enjoyed competing there and truly appreciate the great support from the Parisian and French fans over the years. My focus now is on recovery and healing, so I can come back stronger for the 2026 season,” Tsitsipas said in a statement.

Last year, at the Paris Masters, Tsitsipas defeated lucky loser Roberto Carballés Baena, Alejandro Tabilo, and Francisco Cerúndolo in the first three rounds before falling to the eventual champion, Alexander Zverev, in the quarterfinals.
