‘It’s Crazy’: Alexander Zverev’s ‘Ego’ Under Scrutiny As Vandeweghe Shreds His Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner Take

Coco Vandeweghe dismantles Alexander Zverev's bold claim that he belongs in the same elite tier as Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner.

Alexander Zverev recently made headlines by boldly placing himself in the exact same elite tier as Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, while acknowledging that Jannik Sinner currently sits in a league of his own above them all. However, former pro and current analyst Coco Vandeweghe is firmly shutting down that narrative.

While Zverev has had an incredibly successful career on the ATP Tour with 24 singles titles,  Vandeweghe exposed the one fatal flaw in his argument, proving that grouping him with the sport’s current elite isn’t just premature; it’s factually wrong.

Alexander Zverev’s ‘Big Gap’ Claim About Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic Shut Down by Coco Vandeweghe

During his post-match press conference in Madrid after a lopsided final loss to Sinner, Zverev was asked whether a clear divide exists between Sinner, Alcaraz, and the rest of the field. The world No. 3 rejected that notion, denying Alcaraz a spot at the top and declaring that Sinner is in a league of his own.

“Well, I think there’s a big gap between Sinner and everybody else right now. It’s quite simple. I think there’s a big gap between Sinner and everybody else. And I think there’s a big gap between Alcaraz, myself, maybe Novak, and everybody else. I think there’s two gaps right now,” Zverev said.

For Vandeweghe, comparing Zverev to Sinner, Alcaraz, and Djokovic is simply impossible because of one massive hole in the German’s resume. You cannot be in the highest tier of tennis without winning a Major.

“I think it’s a non-starter,” Vandeweghe told on the discussion with Mark Petchey on Tennis Channel. “I think Sascha’s not in the same conversation as Jannik, Carlos, or Novak because of the one thing that he’s missing: a Grand Slam. He’s not a Grand Slam winner.”

To put the gap into perspective, the trio Zverev is trying to join currently holds a combined 35 Majors. The world No. 1 Sinner already has 4 Grand Slam titles to his name. At 22, Alcaraz captured his 7th Grand Slam title by winning the 2026 Australian Open. Djokovic, often regarded as the G.O.A.T., holds an all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles. Zverev, meanwhile, has zero.

“There are plenty of world number ones that never won a Slam, Marcelo Ríos being one of them that comes straight to mind, who won’t be a Hall of Famer because he doesn’t have that Grand Slam,” Vandeweghe added. “So, I don’t think it’s fair to the accomplishments of Novak, Carlos, and Jannik that Sasha would even think that he’s in that same category.”

However, if Zverev isn’t in the top tier, where does he actually stand? Vandeweghe admits that, based on his current form, Zverev is a serious threat, ranking him third if everyone is fully healthy. But she added that it’s also because Djokovic has been playing a lighter schedule recently. “I think out of respect, Novak needs to be ahead of Sascha,” Vandeweghe stated.

While Vandeweghe completely disagrees with Zverev’s claim, she actually understands his right to say it. “I absolutely think he meant it that way. I think he absolutely has the ego, and you kind of need that, right?” Vandeweghe noted. “When I was playing against Serena Williams, if you think, ‘Oh my gosh, I have no chance to take a set or even beat Serena,’ why are you even going out there?”

Ultimately, Vandeweghe sees that the ‘false bravado’ in Zverev’s bold claim is just a coping mechanism to survive the ATP Tour.

Zverev, Djokovic, and Sinner are set to begin their Italian Open campaign on Friday with the Round of 64 matches. Meanwhile, Alcaraz is aiming to be back for Wimbledon, recovering from a right wrist injury that made him skip Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros.
