Venus Williams was left frustrated and had a heated exchange with the chair umpire during her first-round match at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday. The 45-year-old shared her displeasure after being denied cold water amid difficult weather conditions at Indian Wells.
Williams’ campaign at Indian Wells ended in 2 hours and 24 minutes, with a hard-fought 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-6 defeat to Diane Parry of France. Defeat in the Southern California desert meant that the older Williams sister has now lost her last eight matches on the WTA Tour.
Venus Williams Clashes With Umpire Over Cold Water Delay
After winning the second set, 1 hour and 46 minutes into the match, Williams shared her frustration with the chair umpire over not having access to cold water. A video of the exchange was later shared on social media.
“If I’m not getting the water, I’m calling the referee. It takes two sets to get cold water. It’s extremely unfair. No, it’s not okay. It’s not okay, get the water!”
The seven-time singles Grand Slam winner later described the weather conditions during her match as “impossible.” She lamented the windy conditions amid the warm weather.
“I think today is not the kind of day that you want to assess. The conditions are impossible. Also my match in Austin, the conditions were impossible. I have played the last two matches in very difficult conditions,” she said during her post-match press conference.
“Today, I tried to adjust. But it’s not easy. You can’t trust anything that you do out there. You should get out there and play in that wind and you’ll tell me too if you can create some magic or if you can be perfect or not,” she added.
Temperatures at Indian Wells have soared into the high 70s this week, with forecasts calling for highs as high as 100°F during the latter stages of the BNP Paribas Open, according to AccuWeather.
Williams’ 2026 Season: Eight Straight Losses on WTA Tour
Williams remains a fan favorite at 45 and continues to compete at the top level of women’s tennis. She made her tennis comeback in July last year and has since claimed just one singles win, against Peyton Stearns in Washington.
The tennis legend has had more success in women’s doubles, reaching the quarterfinals at the US Open last year. But Williams is still waiting for her first win since the turn of the year, in singles or doubles.
Williams showed glimpses of her quality against Parry, hitting 4 aces and breaking her opponent’s serve once.
It remains to be seen what the next step will be in Williams’ comeback tour. With the Miami Open next up on the WTA calendar, she could receive a wildcard for the event. Speculation continues over a reunion with sister Serena Williams in doubles.
