Ruud Previously Said He Would Leave the Australian Swing Due to the Birth of His Child
Earlier in January, Ruud said that his baby could be born any time and that he would have to leave Australia in that instance.
“One of the biggest moments will be welcoming our first child back home. Honestly, she (the baby) can come any time now. So hopefully I get to stay for the rest of the tournament, but you never know. I might get a call and be on the plane back home out of here. It’s no short trip back home so hopefully she stays in for a few extra weeks and I can be there for the birth, and later in the year we’ll have our wedding and celebrate our marriage,” the Norwegian said.
Ruud competed at the Australian Open and reached the fourth round following wins over Mattia Bellucci, Jaume Munar, and Marin Čilić. Here, he faced eighth seed Ben Shelton and won the opening set before the American won the next three sets to clinch the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
Ruud is next scheduled to compete in Norway’s Davis Cup first-round clash against Great Britain.
