He defeated World No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the 2026 Australian Open semifinal in five hours and 27 minutes to reach his first final in Melbourne, where he took down the 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djoković. After losing the first set against the Serbian legend, the Spaniard made an impressive comeback to complete a career Grand Slam. He had already won the French Open in 2024 and last year, Wimbledon twice in 2023 and 2024, defeating Djokovic both times, and the US Open in 2022 and last year.
Now, at 22 years and 258 days, he is the youngest men’s player ever to complete a Career Grand Slam, surpassing the American Don Budge, who had done it at 22 years and 355 days. Before this, Nadal was the youngest men’s player to achieve this feat, winning all four slams at 24, but by defeating Djokovic, Alcaraz dethroned the 22-time Grand Slam champion.
Right after the match, Nadal met Alcaraz in person and congratulated him on achieving this historic feat. He hugged him, exchanged a few words with him, and patted his shoulders in the hallway at Melbourne Park.
During his winner’s speech, Alcaraz thanked Nadal for being present during this important moment in his career, saying, “I think the first time, professionally, because I know you were watching me when I was like 14-15 years old. So, it’s been a long time. But yeah, for me it’s such an honor playing in front of you. We had great, great batters on the court, not too many. But for me it was an honor sharing the court, practicing, playing matches, the locker room, and now seeing you watching my matches. For me, it’s just a privilege, and thank you very much for being here.”
This lighthearted exchange between these two Spaniards marked a special moment in professional tennis, with Alcaraz announcing the beginning of a new era, defined by his and World No. 2 Jannik Sinner’s dominance. The last time a player not named Alcaraz or Sinner won the Grand Slam was back in 2023, when Djokovic won his 24th major title at the US Open.

Alcaraz showed a dominant performance in the championship match of the 2026 Australian Open. Despite dropping the first set 2-6 after a stunning serving by Djokovic, the Spaniard mounted an impressive comeback to take the next three sets 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 and etch his name in history. He broke the Serbian legend five times in the entire match, while committing just 27 unforced errors and hitting 36 winners.
He managed to land 65% of his first serves and won around 77% of those points, while winning 57% of his second serve points. During the entirety of the match, he struck 9 aces, leaving Djokovic looking for answers. In the last set, both players held serve until the final point of the match, where Alcaraz held his nerve to break the Serbian legend and take the match. This was also the first Championship match that Djokovic lost after reaching 10 finals in the last 18 years.
