Learner Tien steps onto Arthur Ashe Stadium this Sunday evening for what many consider the biggest match of his young career. The 19-year-old American will face 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the first round of the 2025 US Open. While much attention focuses on this matchup, Tien’s coaching setup has undergone a major change that could prove crucial in this historic encounter.
Michael Chang Joins Learner Tien’s Team Ahead of the US Open
The most significant addition to Tien’s corner is Michael Chang, the former world No. 2 who made tennis history as the youngest male player to win a Grand Slam singles title. Chang captured the 1989 French Open at 17 years and 109 days old, defeating Stefan Edberg in the final. The tennis legend brings impressive credentials to Tien’s team, having won 34 ATP singles titles and 662 tour-level matches throughout his career.
Chang’s connection with Tien started earlier this year when they first met at the Hong Kong ATP 250 event. What began as a brief hello has evolved into a coaching partnership that started the week before Washington. The timing works perfectly since both live just 20 minutes apart in California.

The first round match against Djokovic marks Chang’s debut in Tien’s player box, adding Grand Slam championship experience to the teenager’s support team. Chang previously coached Kei Nishikori, who reached a Grand Slam final and played on tennis’s biggest stages.
Tien’s primary traveling coach remains Erik Nelson-Kortland, a former USTA Player Development national coach. Kortland brings extensive experience, having been mentored by coaching legends including Jose Higueras, Jay Berger, Ola Malmqvist, and Andy Brandi. The partnership between Chang and Kortland creates a well-rounded coaching approach that combines tour-level playing experience with professional coaching expertise.
Tien’s Remarkable 2025 Season and Novak Djokovic’s Challenge Ahead
Tien has experienced a meteoric rise this season, climbing from world No. 122 at the start of 2025 to his current career-high ranking of No. 48. His breakthrough moment came at the Australian Open, where he qualified for the main draw and shocked fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in a 4-hour 48-minute match.
The victory made him the youngest American to defeat a top-5 player at a Grand Slam since 1990. He followed this success with impressive wins over world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in Acapulco, Ben Shelton in Mallorca, and Andrey Rublev in Washington.
Regarding the Djokovic matchup, both Chang and Kortland have emphasized the special nature of this opportunity. “This is an unbelievable opportunity. You’re playing maybe one of the greatest of all time,” Kortland said about facing the Serbian champion. Chang echoed this sentiment, noting that “Learner has nothing to lose” against Djokovic.
