Why Does Martina Navratilova Think Carlos Alcaraz Holds an Edge Over Jannik Sinner?

Alcaraz and Sinner have completely taken over the men’s tour in recent years. This season alone, they clashed three times in Grand Slam finals since the French Open. Their dominance becomes even more impressive when you consider both have captured four Grand Slam titles each over the past two years.

The pair continued their championship-level tennis at the most recent Major, the US Open, meeting in the final once again. However, the match tilted decisively in Alcaraz’s favor as the Spaniard lost just nine points on his first serve and was broken only once. That control led him to a commanding 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The 22-year-old never appeared rattled during the biggest moments, stepping up his game when everything was on the line. While several factors contributed to his composed performance, 18-time Major champion Martina Navratilova believes Alcaraz’s edge comes from his fearless approach and ability to stay loose under pressure.

“Alcaraz just brings his best when it matters the best. He doesn’t feel the pressure against Sinner because he knows he has to play well and if he loses, it’s okay. Carlos has just got a slightly bigger game than Jannik, and when it cooks he is practically unbeatable. The numbers don’t lie, Alcaraz was better across the board,” she told Sky Sports.

The victory extended Alcaraz’s head-to-head advantage over Sinner to 10-5 and earned him his sixth Grand Slam crown, including a second US Open title.

What Did Sinner Have To Say About Alcaraz’s US Open Victory?

What makes this rivalry truly special is how their fierce on-court competition transforms into genuine respect once the final point is played. As the Arthur Ashe crowd celebrated Alcaraz’s triumph, Sinner graciously acknowledged his opponent’s superior performance that day.

“You are doing an amazing job. I know there’s a lot of hard work behind this performance today, you were better than me. Enjoy it. It’s a great moment,” he said.

Both players have firmly established themselves at the top of the ATP rankings, but Alcaraz has now overtaken Sinner to reclaim the No. 1 spot. The victory ended the Italian’s impressive 65-week reign at the summit. Additionally, the 22-year-old snapped Sinner’s remarkable 27-match winning streak at hardcourt Slams.
