Naomi Osaka is not letting outside noise dictate the narrative around her game. After facing renewed criticism over her on-court intensity during the 2026 Australian Open, the four-time Grand Slam champion fired back at podcast commentators who labeled tennis grunting “unsportsmanlike” and “an ick.” Osaka’s response sparked a playful but pointed exchange with close friend Taylor Townsend about launching their own unfiltered podcast.
Naomi Osaka Responds to Podcast Commentary on On-Court Intensity
The debate over grunting in tennis is hardly new. For decades, players have been scrutinized for their vocal expressions during rallies, with some critics arguing it distracts opponents or audiences. Athletes and coaches, however, have long explained that controlled exhalation is tied to timing, rhythm, and power generation.
Osaka’s frustration appears rooted in what she views as a widening disconnect between professional players and segments of modern sports media, particularly influencer-led podcasts that dissect the sport without firsthand competitive experience. Following her high-intensity “C’mon” celebrations during her recent run in Melbourne, social media chatter and podcast commentary again turned toward her volume and passion rather than her performance.
Osaka addressed that criticism head-on in a Threads post that quickly circulated across platforms. “I laugh when people that don’t know anything about tennis start a podcast about tennis,” she wrote. “What do you mean grunting is unsportsmanlike and it gives you the ick? Watch a different sport lol.”
She later reposted the message to her Instagram Stories, adding another sharp caption: “Cause who gave them a microphone? Take it awayyyуууу.”

Osaka then shifted gears, tagging Townsend and floating a tongue-in-cheek idea. “Me and @tay_taytownsend are gonna start a podcast. We would get canceled after the first episode though #nofilter.”
Townsend, a former Australian Open doubles champion and close friend of Osaka, embraced the idea. She reshared the story and replied, “You know… let’s cook up sis.”

What Happened During Osaka and Townsend’s 2026 Australian Open Campaigns?
Osaka and Townsend both recently concluded their respective Australian Open campaigns. The Japanese tennis star, who was seeded 16th, defeated Antonia Ružić and Sorana Cîrstea in three sets to reach the third round. Just hours before her third-round clash with Maddison Inglis, she withdrew due to a recurring left abdominal injury.
She revealed the pain worsened during her pre-match warm-up, after initially flaring up in the second round, where she briefly left the court and took a medical timeout. In an emotional social media post, Osaka admitted her body has felt different since returning from pregnancy. She later withdrew from the Qatar Open in Doha to undergo further medical tests and focus on recovery.
Meanwhile, Townsend’s Melbourne campaign was characterized by a resilient singles effort and deep runs in both doubles draws. In singles, Townsend successfully navigated two qualifying rounds before falling to Storm Hunter in the third. However, she entered the main draw as a lucky loser, where she ultimately lost a three-set match to fellow American Hailey Baptiste.
In the women’s doubles, Townsend and partner Kateřina Siniaková entered as the top seeds and defending champions. The pair reached the quarterfinals without dropping a set, but their quest for a repeat title was halted in a 2-6, 6-3, 0-6 upset by the seventh-seeded duo of Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunić.
Townsend also excelled in the mixed doubles with Nikola Mektić, advancing to the semifinals, where they were narrowly defeated 7-6(2), 2-6, [13-11] by the eventual champions, Olivia Gadecki and John Peers.
