Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka was recently spotted training in Montreal with esteemed Polish coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, best known for guiding Iga Świątek to multiple Major titles and a World No. 1 ranking. The sighting comes just days after Osaka ended her 10-month collaboration with Patrick Mouratoglou, as she eyes the North American hard-court swing and a potential resurgence.

The coaching switch follows Osaka’s disappointing early exit at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, where she fell to Emma Raducanu in straight sets in the second round. Her parting with Mouratoglou was made public via a heartfelt Instagram story, where she thanked him for their collaboration and wished him well in future endeavors.
“Merci Patrick ❤️ it was such a great experience learning from you,” Osaka wrote. “Wishing you nothing but the best. You are one of the coolest people I’ve ever met and I’m sure I’ll see you around 🙏🏽.”
The Osaka-Mouratoglou partnership began in September 2024, shortly after she split with coach Wim Fissette. Together, they made a solid start to their working relationship, reaching the fourth round at the China Open in Beijing. Additionally, Osaka reached the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland, although she lost to Denmark’s Clara Tauson, and captured the WTA 125 title in Saint-Malo.
She posted respectable results at bigger tournaments throughout their collaboration, including fourth-round appearances in Miami and Rome, plus third-round finishes at the 2025 Australian Open and Wimbledon. Despite the measurable progress, the pair ultimately chose to pursue separate paths.
Now, Osaka appears to be trialing Wiktorowski, who was instrumental in Świątek’s meteoric rise to the top of women’s tennis. Wiktorowski joined Świątek’s team in late 2021, helping her claim four of her six Grand Slam titles and maintain a stronghold on the WTA rankings. The Polish coach and Świątek amicably parted ways in October 2024.
Before working with Świątek, he coached fellow Polish star Agnieszka Radwańska, leading her to a Wimbledon final and a career-high No. 2 ranking.
Can Osaka Build Momentum at the Canadian Open?
On the court, Osaka kicked off her WTA 1000 campaign in Montreal with an encouraging 6-4, 6-2 victory over Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault. The straightforward win provided a positive start to her collaboration with Wiktorowski.
Next, she faces a tougher test against 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the second round. It will be their fifth clash on the WTA circuit, with the head-to-head currently tied at two wins apiece.
The winner will advance to the third round to face either Renata Zarazúa or 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko, setting up another challenging matchup in what could be a crucial tournament for Osaka’s confidence heading into the US Open.
