Naomi Osaka Reveals Fighting Illness ‘She’s Got From Her Daughter’ After Sad Start at United Cup

Naomi Osaka opened up about a persistent illness caught from her daughter after losing to Maria Sakkari in straight sets at the 2026 United Cup.

The highly anticipated debut of Naomi Osaka at the 2026 United Cup in Perth did not unfold as the Japanese star had envisioned, as she ended up losing the match. Facing Greece’s top female player, Maria Sakkari, Osaka appeared physically hindered throughout the contest, struggling to find the explosive form that has defined her career.

While the loss was a setback for Team Japan, the post-match discussion quickly shifted from the scoreline to the former World No. 1’s visibly compromised health, which she addressed directly following the match.

Naomi Osaka Reveals the Health Issues That Hindered Her Performance

Throughout the match, spectators and commentators noted Osaka’s frequent coughing and visible fatigue, signs that she was battling significant physical discomfort. Although she attempted to remain competitive, her movement and intensity were clearly diminished by a lingering respiratory issue.

During the post-match press conference, Osaka provided candid insight into her condition, explaining that while the situation was not critical, it was frustratingly timed after a productive training block.

“I mean, honestly, from my end, it’s tough to say like I don’t care because I do care,” Osaka told the reporters. “I kind of have been dealing with some health stuff, so I’m kind of just happy to be out here right now. It’s not like serious, but yeah.”

The former World No. 1 expressed disappointment that her physical state prevented her from showcasing her off-season improvements. “I’m not operating at the percent that I want to be operating at, which kind of sucks because, like, I had a really good off-season, so I thought I was going to do really well her. Then I got really sick. I think I’m at the tail end of that, but still not amazing.”

When pressed about the duration of her illness, Osaka revealed a personal detail regarding its origin. “Honestly, it’s been a minute, which is why I’m shocked that I still have it. I think I got it from my daughter. I want to say, like before Christmas Eve,” she added.

Maria Sakkari Secures Crucial Victory Amidst Engagement

While Osaka battled through her illness, Sakkari capitalized on the opportunity with a sharp and disciplined performance. The Greek standout, currently ranked No. 52, needed just one hour and 34 minutes to dispatch Osaka with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the RAC Arena.

The victory capped a momentous week for Sakkari, whose personal life also made significant headlines in Perth. Just days before the tournament, it was confirmed that she had become engaged to her long-term partner, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, the son of the Greek Prime Minister. Sakkari was spotted wearing her engagement ring during her time in Australia and acknowledged the milestone, describing herself as a “very lucky girl.”

The straight-sets win provided Team Greece with a crucial early advantage in the tie, while Sakkari’s composed display suggested she is poised for a strong resurgence in the 2026 season.
