The fourth round match between Mirra Andreeva and Elina Svitolina at the Australian Open 2026 ended controversially when the Russian left Rod Laver Arena to heavy boos on Sunday night. The Russian teenager had just suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the Ukrainian in straight sets.
Rather than approaching the net for the traditional post-match handshake, Andreeva walked straight to the chair umpire, sparking a wave of disapproval from spectators who couldn’t understand the real reason behind her actions.

Andreeva committed 18 unforced errors in the opening set while trying to build momentum against the veteran. WTA World No. 12 Svitolina showed her invaluable experience and claimed the first set 6-2.
The second set began differently for the Russian, as she returned from the locker room with renewed determination to win the match. The 8th seed, fresh off her Adelaide International title, took a 2-0, however, Svitolina’s on-court skills proved decisive in the crucial moments.
Her strong return game allowed her to close out the second set comfortably at 6-4, winning the match in just 84 minutes.

After the match, Andreeva went directly towards the chair umpire, without shaking her opponents’ hands, and the audience immediately showed their disapproval with loud boos that echoed throughout Rod Laver Arena. However, those watching from the stands could not understand why Andreeva did what appeared to be disrespecting her opponent.

The real reason is that Svitolina has been transparent about her refusal to shake hands with Russian players competing in professional tennis. The Ukrainian has maintained this stance as a political position against the Russian government and its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Andreeva, by not going to the net, was honoring Svitolina’s wishes rather than showing disrespect of any kind.
Svitolina Reaches Melbourne Quarterfinal
The Ukrainian now has a 33-12 win-loss record in Melbourne, demonstrating her consistency at one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments. More importantly, this victory marked Svitolina’s 14th career Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance, placing her among the most accomplished players on the WTA Tour.
Since returning to professional tennis in 2012, only three women have reached more Grand Slam quarterfinals than Svitolina: Serena Williams with 21 appearances, Simona Halep with 16, and Aryna Sabalenka with 15. This also marks her second consecutive quarterfinal appearance for the Ukrainian, who lost to the eventual champion Madison Keys last year.
This victory also marked her 44th triumph over a top-10 opponent at Grand Slam tournaments, showcasing her ability to compete against the top players.
