Martina Navratilova recently weighed in on Iga Świątek’s prospects of completing a career Grand Slam at the 2026 Australian Open. Despite establishing herself as one of the most formidable forces on the WTA Tour with six major titles, the Melbourne major remains the lone missing piece in the Pole’s résumé. Navratilova noted that while Świątek may not carry overwhelming pressure into the season’s opening Slam, consistency will be pivotal on her path to the title.
Martina Navratilova Speaks on Iga Świątek’s Chances of Completing a Career Grand Slam at 2026 Australian Open
American tennis legend and 18-time Grand Slam champion Navratilova recently offered a candid assessment of Świątek’s Australian Open prospects. Speaking with Prakash Amritraj and Steve Weissman on the Tennis Channel, Navratilova noted that the slower Melbourne courts could work in the Pole’s favor but cautioned that her back-to-back defeats at the United Cup may have dented her confidence.
“I think the slower court will help her. We will see if it stays slow, if it actually is slow. But having lost to Gauff and Bencic just a couple of weeks ago can’t help her confidence. So, given the history and those two matches, not being really matched up, or certainly not confident. But again, it’s Iga, should be sharp in those warm-up shots there,” Navratilova said.

When Weissman asked her about the pressure of winning the final Grand Slam to complete a career Grand Slam, Navratilova said:
“For me was US Open. It was building up, and I was very relieved when I got it done, because it can become such a minus, even though I won all the Majors so many times, but the US Open was elusive and so it is for Iga here. At the same time, this is the first time she can win the slam because she just won Wimbledon last year. So not as big a pressure cooker, but you have to look at it as an opportunity. But if she doesn’t win again and again, then it becomes a pressure cooker,” she concluded.
Świątek came one step closer to a career Slam last year by winning her first Wimbledon title after double-bageling Amanda Anisimova in the final. She also claimed a title later at the Cincinnati Open but could not close the season by winning the WTA Finals in Riyadh.
However, the world No. 2 has endured an uneven start to her 2026 campaign. Świątek’s only outing ahead of the Australian Open came at the United Cup, where she began impressively with victories over Eva Lys, Suzan Lamens, and Maya Joint. That momentum stalled at the end of the tournament, as she suffered back-to-back losses to Coco Gauff in the semifinals and Belinda Bencic in the final. While Poland ultimately lifted the trophy, those defeats prompted questions about Świątek’s form heading into Melbourne.
Now it remains to be seen how Świątek performs in Melbourne and whether she can complete a career Grand Slam this year. As of now, the outcome remains uncertain, with the world No. 2 yet to begin her campaign. Świątek faces China’s Yue Yuan in the first round on Monday, Jan. 19. According to PFSN’s Tennis Simulator, the Pole is 91% likely to win the clash.
