Madison Keys Lauds Eugenie Bouchard Ahead of Latter’s Tennis Swansong

Former Top-5 player Eugenie Bouchard will retire from tennis following the Canadian Open, for which, she received a wildcard to the main draw. Madison Keys was asked about the 2014 Wimbledon runner-up and she spoke about their history together. The Australian Open champion said that she knew Bouchard for a long time as they grew up together in tennis.

“We grew up together in juniors, so I’ve known Genie for a very long time and played against her when we were young. It’s always special to grow up with someone and watch each other move up in the rankings. She’s had a phenomenal career and accomplished some great things, including Grand Slam finals—two I think—and reaching the top five. Or maybe a final and a semi-final,” Keys said.

The Australian Open champion also heaped praise on Bouchard for her authenticity, stating that the Canadian always spoke her mind.

“I think Genie is just herself, and I think it comes across. Everything she says and does feels authentic. People have always been drawn to that. We like to see authentic people in the spotlight. Sometimes everything is too scripted, and I feel like she never fell into that.”

Madison Keys’ seeding saw her receive a bye to the second round of the Canadian Open. Here, she will take on either Laura Siegemund or Tatjana Maria.

Eugenie Bouchard Will Face Emiliana Arango in Canadian Open 1R

Eugenie Bouchard’s tennis swansong at the Canadian Open will start with Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, who is ranked 81st in the world. Whoever out of the two comes out on top, will face Belinda Bencic in the second round of the WTA 1000 event.

This is Bouchard’s first main-draw appearance at the Canadian Open since 2019, when she lost to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu in the first round. The 2014 Wimbledon runner-up last won a match at the WTA 1000 event back in 2016, when she reached the third round. Bouchard beat the likes of Lucie Šafářová and then-11th seed Dominika Cibulková before losing 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 to eventual semifinalist Kristína Kučová.
