The quick turnaround between tournaments on the North American hard-court swing may have delayed Leylah Fernandez’s date, but she made sure to fit it in during her free time. The Canadian shared insights into her date with the mystery man ahead of the Cincinnati Open, including how her family and team were part of the story.
How Did Leylah Fernandez Meet the Guy She Recently Dated?
Fernandez began her North American swing on a high, capturing the Mubadala DC Citi Open, her first title in nearly two years. After her triumph, the Canadian confessed she had a date lined up but had to postpone it because of the brief turnaround to the Canadian Open.
However, Fernandez couldn’t carry that momentum into the WTA 1000 event in Montreal, where she faced a shocking first-round exit. That early loss had a silver lining though, giving her ample time before the Cincinnati Open to finally go on her date. In an interview with the Tennis Channel, Fernandez shared that she had a great time with that guy.
“Oh man! I had a good time with the guy. He was funny, he was nice,” she said.
Fernandez further explained that most interested men lived abroad, making dating impractical, and revealed how that mystery guy caught her attention.

“It’s a little hard because a lot of guys who have been messaging me are international. So they were going to fly in and I was like not going to do that to them. So I was giving it one more day and then stumbled upon him and his message caught my attention. When I asked him, ‘Did you even see my video?’ And he was like ‘No I didn’t!'” she added.
What Did Fernandez Reveal About Stalking the Guy and Their Second Date?
Later in the conversation, Fernandez explained that the guy’s message intrigued her enough to vet his background. Once she confirmed he was genuine, she sought input from her family and team. The connection seems to be going well, as Fernandez and her mystery date already have a second meeting planned and continue to stay in touch.
“His first message was kind of caught my attention, and then afterwards I stalked him to make sure that he is real (laughs). He was a real person, seemed like a nice guy and then got a couple of opinions from family, team members, make sure that they were okay with it too. There’s been a second date, and we are keeping in contact, so we’ll see,” she said.
On the tennis front, Fernandez aims to impress again at the Cincinnati Open, entering as the 21st seed and receiving a direct spot in the second round. The Canadian will face Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, with the winner set to play either Taylor Townsend or Liudmila Samsonova in the third round.
