‘Absolutely Horrid’ – Leylah Fernandez’s Father Triggers Fans With ‘Demoralizing’ Coaching in Loss to Victoria Mboko

Leylah Fernandez's fans fume over her father's "demoralizing" coaching timeout, sparking a massive wave of backlash online.

The tennis world is reeling after a hot-mic caught coach Jorge Fernandez delivering a blistering mid-match tirade to his daughter, Leylah Fernandez, during her recent loss to Victoria Mboko in Strasbourg. While tough coaching methods are nothing new in sports, the deeply personal and public nature of this dressing-down has sparked a massive wave of backlash on social media.

Leylah Fernandez Fans Slam Father’s Brutal Coaching After Emotional Match

During the WTA 500 Strasbourg quarterfinals, Leylah had a straight-sets loss (6-4, 6-4) to fellow Canadian, Mboko. But a clip of Jorge’s coaching timeout circulated on X, flooded with messages of support for the 23-year-old and condemnation of her father’s methods.

In the video, Jorge can be heard saying: “How many times do I have to shove it right in your face before you finally adjust your game? You have so many open opportunities for parallel shots, and you just blow them all, you blow every single one. You just don’t want to listen.” He also asked Leylah something no athlete would like to hear: “Do you actually want to play tennis, or not? It’s not any more complicated than that.”

Fans pointed out the lack of constructive advice and the visible emotional toll the lecture must have taken on her, especially after such a loss.

“Absolutely horrid. Leylah seems to be so nice and sweet, and her father the opposite, judging by these comments,” a comment read.

Leylah has long been known for her infectious smile and positive energy on the court. She even earned the Billie Jean King Cup Heart Award in 2023 for her leadership that led Team Canada to a historic title. Seeing that spirit seemingly crushed by her own corner struck a major nerve with fans.

“I don’t believe parents should be on the coaching staff like its so demoralizing for the player in these cases,” another fan wrote.

The parent-coach dynamic is notoriously complicated in tennis, as we have seen with Stefanos and Apostolos Tsitsipas.

Jorge, a former semi-professional soccer player with no formal tennis background, actually taught himself the sport from scratch to coach Leylah and her sister. His unorthodox methods helped her reach the 2021 US Open final, but fans think Leylah could consider a coaching change.

More fans expressed their sympathy with Leylah.

“She was almost in tears today”.

“Que horror meu deus coitada de leylah.” (How horrible my god, poor Leylah.)

“No positive feedback, no encouraging words. No clue how he thinks she’s going to turn a match around with insults and belittlement. Horrible person.”

The most notable part is that Jorge chose to weaponize Leylah’s four-year Grand Slam quarterfinal drought, comparing it with Mboko. “She (Mboko) developed that style of play, her dad told me so, from watching us. And you refuse to admit it,” Jorge vented.

With this win, Mboko, who beat Naomi Osaka to win the Canadian Open last year, advances to the semifinal in Strasbourg. Meanwhile, Leylah will shift focus to the French Open, as her first match in this year’s tournament against Alycia Parks is scheduled on May 25.
