Leylah Fernandez penned an emotional letter to her mother, Irene Fernandez, in honor of Mother’s Day. Irene is married to Ecuadorian former professional footballer Jorge, and together they have three daughters – Jodeci Malixi, Fernandez, and Bianca.

While Fernandez and Bianca have pursued careers in sports, specifically tennis, their eldest sister, Jodeci, is a dentist.

This year, Mother’s Day fell on Sunday, May 11, 2025. To commemorate the occasion, Leylah Fernandez took to social media to share photos of herself with her mother, Irene.

In her post, Fernandez expressed her gratitude to her mother for her “hugs,” “words of encouragement,” and “patience.” She also credited Irene for helping shape her into who she is today.

“Dear Mami, Thank you for being there with your hugs, words of encouragement, and endless patience throughout the years. Your endless love and unwavering support have shaped me into who I am today. Wishing you a happy Mother’s Day! Xoxo,” Leylah Fernandez captioned her Instagram post.

Leylah Fernandez Recently Concluded Her Campaign at Italian Open 2025

Fernandez kicked off her clay court season at the 2025 Madrid Open, where she lost 4-6, 6-3, 4-6 to Ann Li at the singles event in the second round. In the doubles event, she paired up with Yulia Putintseva, but Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez defeated them with a score of 7-6(5), 4-6, [9-11] in the first round.

The Canadian next competed at the 2025 Catalonia Open, and she overcame Lucía Cortez Llorca 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the singles event. However, her run at the tournament was cut short in the second round by Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who defeated Fernandez with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 2-6. In the doubles event, Fernandez and her partner Lulu Sun finished as the runners-up after losing to Bianca Andreescu and Aldila Sutjiadi with a score of 2-6, 4-6 in the final.

Most recently, Leylah Fernandez competed at the 2025 Italian Open. She was the 24th seed and started her campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. She defeated Antonia Ružić 6-4, 6-0 before facing a defeat against Marta Kostyuk with a score of 6-4, 6-2 in the third round of the singles event.

In the doubles event, Fernandez and Putintseva secured a victory against Makoto Ninomiya and Xu Yifan with a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. However, they were eliminated in the second round by the third-seeded pair of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-4.
