Ben Shelton’s Health Struggles Left Learner Tien in a ‘Tricky’ Situation During Indian Wells 3R Win: Here’s Why

Learner Tien reflected on the unique challenges behind his hard-fought Indian Wells victory over Ben Shelton.

Learner Tien offered a candid assessment after pulling off one of the most notable wins of his young career at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open. The 20-year-old American defeated No. 8 seed Ben Shelton in the third round at Indian Wells, navigating a tense three-set contest between two of the ATP Tour’s rising left-handers. Tien eventually prevailed 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3, later explaining that the match presented unique challenges as Shelton appeared to be battling illness throughout.

Signs of Illness Surrounded Ben Shelton Ahead of the Learner Tien Showdown

The result marked a significant milestone for Tien, who continues to establish himself among the new generation of American men’s tennis players. His victory not only pushed him deeper into the draw at Indian Wells but also extended his perfect record against Shelton. Tien now leads their head-to-head series 2-0 after previously defeating the big-serving American on grass in Mallorca last summer.

Shelton, meanwhile, had already shown signs of physical discomfort earlier in the tournament. During his second-round match against Reilly Opelka, he appeared low on energy, frequently pausing at the towel box and rehydrating between points, suggesting he was dealing with an illness that lingered into the matchup with Tien.

What Tactical Challenges Did Tien Face Against Shelton?

Speaking after the match, Tien acknowledged that he had heard about Shelton’s condition before stepping onto the court and quickly sensed that something was not quite right. Still, he emphasized that the match remained difficult to manage because of Shelton’s aggressive style. “I mean, tricky match, for sure,” Tien said during his post-match press conference.

“Going out there, I heard around that maybe he wasn’t feeling that great. It wasn’t super surprising to me that he was just taking big cuts, he was going for a lot of balls. Just overall a tough match to navigate.”

In a separate interview with Tennis Channel, Tien elaborated further on the dynamic of the contest. He explained that Shelton’s condition influenced how both players approached points, particularly early in the match. “I think especially starting out, I could see he wasn’t fully there,” Tien said. “So I think mentally that played into it a little bit. I was in some areas overplaying just because I felt like he was just going to swing for the fences.”

Even so, Tien remained cautious throughout the match because Shelton’s serve continued to pose a threat. “But still, whether he’s feeling great or not, he still serves very, very well. So he’s always still in the match, and it was still kind of tight throughout the whole thing. But I’m just happy I was able to get through.”

Tien will take on the 18th seed, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, in the Round of 16. This is going to be their second meeting on the ATP Tour, with the Spaniard winning their only match at the 2025 Citi DC Open third round. The winner of this match will advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face either second seed Jannik Sinner or the winner of the third round match between João Fonseca and 23rd seed Tommy Paul.
