Former ATP pro John McEnroe recently made a bold statement about Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s rising potential on clay. The seven-time Grand Slam champion drew a serious comparison between the 2025 French Open finalists and the ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal.
The statement came as Alcaraz defeated Sinner in a high-stakes five-setter showdown to secure his fifth major title.
John McEnroe Sparks Controversy by Comparing Rafael Nadal’s Legacy to Alcaraz and Sinner’s Rise
Before Alcaraz secured his eighth tour-level win over Sinner to clinch the Roland Garros title, John McEnroe made a controversial statement. In a video released by TNT Sports’ official X account, the 66-year-old compared Sinner and Alcaraz’s current levels on court to that of the 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal.
“I might sound crazy to say this because we just watched the three greatest players that ever lived over the course of last 20 years, Roger obviously, Rafa and Novak. These two guys to me, you look at those guys, you took a look at them bringing their A game. I’m saying Sinner and Alcaraz against Rafael Nadal on clay. You would make a serious argument with both guys if they would be favorite to beat Nadal at his best,” he said.
However, it seems like the statement didn’t go well with the sporting fans who admired the Spaniard’s unmatched legacy. A fan mentioned the strategic side of Nadal’s game during his prime.
“They’re both bashers by mentality. Prime Nadal single-handedly ended the basher era, and practically invented prime Djokovic, showcasing athleticism that forced the Serb to try new diets and regimens. He was the forefather of making you feel dumb for hitting it harder,” he wrote.

Another fan simply compared McEnroe to a 12-year-old who doesn’t have a knack for the sport.
“I’ve seen some awful opinions in my time, but this seriously might be the worst.. it’s something you expect a 12-year-old who has never watched tennis to say.. anyone who has watched Nadal at his best on clay would know he’d straight set both of these guys, McEnroe ur an idiot,” he wrote.
Another comment expressed shock over McEnroe’s words, considering he has witnessed the prime era of Nadal closely.
“I’m surprised someone like McEnroe would have a take like this, he usually doesn’t fall for recency bias, lol Let’s be clear *nobody* would be favorite to beat Nadal at their best on clay,” it said.

Viewing the comment from a different perspective, a fan mentioned how comparing the young champs to Nadal was a disrespect to Federer and Djokovic.
“This is a direct insult to Prime Djokovic and Federer, this guy won 7 slams but knows nothing about tennis,” he wrote.Â
With these and several other comments on a similar note, the fans made it clear that they weren’t ready to take it against Nadal, as Alcaraz’s journey to the top is in its initial phase.
Alcaraz Believes Matching Nadal’s Age for a Fifth Major Is His Destiny
The victory over Sinner at the 2025 French Open championship match took Alcaraz to the seventh sky. During the post-match press conference at Roland Garros, the Spaniard remembered the legacy of his idol, Rafael Nadal. Considering the resemblance in their age while winning the fifth grand slam title, Alcaraz simply believed it was destiny.
“The coincidence of winning my fifth Grand Slam at the same age as Rafa Nadal, I’m going to say that’s destiny. It is a stat that I’m going to keep for me forever, winning the fifth Grand Slam at the same time as Rafa, my idol, my inspiration. It’s a huge honor,” he said.
In 2008, Nadal won his fifth major title by defeating Roger Federer at Wimbledon. He was the same age as Alcaraz when he achieved this feat.
