Ben Shelton is gearing up for a stern test against rising teenage star João Fonseca as he continues his title defense at the 2026 Canadian Open. The American is the highest-ranked seed remaining in the draw after a tournament that has produced several major upsets.
As Shelton looks to avoid another shock result on Sunday, August 9, Fonseca has already issued a warning with a confident statement ahead of their clash.
João Fonseca Sets Up Second Career Meeting With Ben Shelton
The 22nd-seeded Fonseca has secured a couple of high-profile wins en route to the fourth round in Montréal after receiving a first-round bye. He opened his campaign with a 7-6(3), 7-5 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas before backing it up with his second win of the season against Casper Ruud, prevailing 7-6(6), 6-3.
The 19-year-old, who has already won two ATP titles in his young career, is now chasing his first Masters 1000 breakthrough as the field battles for the title in the absence of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and other top contenders.
In his Sunday clash against Shelton, the Brazilian star will look to match his best Masters 1000 result to date, having reached the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this year. Ahead of the contest, Fonseca said in his press conference, “Tough one, for sure. Ben is a huge player.”
“He likes the surface. He likes — here the ball is bouncing high. So his serve is going to be harder than it normally is,” he continued.
Fonseca, however, highlighted the experience he has gained this season, which has helped him navigate high-pressure contests on the ATP Tour. The first half of the season saw Fonseca face Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev for the first time. He also took on Shelton during the American’s title-winning run in Munich.
Although Fonseca lost all four encounters, the experience proved valuable as he went on to produce a breakthrough run at the French Open, where he defeated Novak Djokovic en route to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
“I think this year I learned so much and had some more experience. And, yeah, I’m pretty confident in the match. I’m feeling good on court. So just let it roll and let’s try to rest more and be ready for it Sunday,” he said, expressing his confidence in facing Shelton.
While Fonseca will be seeking revenge following his 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 defeat to Ben Shelton, the American will be aiming to defend his Canadian Open title after winning his maiden Masters 1000 trophy in Toronto 12 months ago.
After breaking new ground at the tournament last year, Shelton’s Masters 1000 campaign this season has been unexpectedly underwhelming. He competed in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, and Rome but managed just one win, which came at the opening event. Montréal, therefore, marks the first Masters 1000 tournament this season where he has strung together multiple victories.
The fifth seed has reached the fourth round with straight-set wins over Jenson Brooksby and Zizou Bergs and will look to keep his campaign alive with a victory over Fonseca on Sunday.
