How Did the Tension Between Jelena Ostapenko and Taylor Townsend Resurface?

The first flashpoint between the two erupted after Townsend ousted Ostapenko from the 2025 US Open. As they met at the net, a heated exchange unfolded, with the Latvian accusing the American of ‘lacking class and education’, remarks that many interpreted as racially charged. Ostapenko later issued an apology for her actions.

On the other hand, Townsend found herself embroiled in controversy during the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen. During a team dinner, she reacted to dishes like bullfrogs, turtles, and large sausages by questioning whether they were edible or poisonous. These comments sparked immediate outrage online, with many lashing out and forcing the American to issue an apology.

Ostapenko’s next stop on the tour is the 2025 China Open, but before diving into competition, she took a moment to soak in the iconic Great Wall of China. She shared the photos on Instagram, drawing a comment that appeared to reference her earlier clash with Townsend.

“Very educated in China ❤️,” it read.

Ostapenko subtly acknowledged the comment with a heart emoji, and a user later shared her reaction on Reddit, drawing a flurry of fan reactions. One fan wrote:

“The only thing that could’ve surpassed this is her posting a turtle soup and rating it 5 stars. Beautiful burn nonetheless.”

A fan claimed both players share blame, accusing them of making the remarks mainly for attention and social media buzz.

“How about they both are in the wrong. Both are uneducated on certain issues. P stating that the sister is uneducated because of some error on a court was actually kinda atupid to say and it comes off as racist. TT posted videos trying to grt likes and laughs and it backfired but it also showed how ignorant and disrespectful she is. So they both can be in the wrong here. Again errrrbody wanna post sh$t just to go viral. She didn’t have to post this but she wanted to go viral and get likes or whatever,” their comment read.

Another fan noted that Townsend’s odd behavior shortly after the US Open incident likely shaped public perception, suggesting her actions weren’t entirely unexpected.

“I think Townsend showing herself to be kind of a weirdo just a couple weeks after the situation with Penko kinda influenced things lol, it’s not like it’s out of nowhere,” they commented.

“I can’t wait until they match up again,” another chimed in.

Another fan praised Ostapenko, writing:

“Damn she’s good. Advantage Penko.”

A fan remarked that Ostapenko and Townsend’s ongoing feud reflects attention-seeking behavior, warning they aren’t individuals children should idolize or emulate.

“Of course she’d like the comment. She will drag it on as long as the opportunity presents itself. That being said both Ostapenko and Townsend are not individuals I would want children to idolize or take after!” they wrote.
